The dynasty began with the acclamation of Philip II of Spain as Philip I of Portugal in 1580, officially recognized in 1581 in the Cortes of Tomar.

Portugal was eventually recognized as a lawful sovereign state by Pope Benedict XIV in 1748 and the title "Most Faithful King" bestowed upon John V and his successors by a papal bull.
