The war has been one of the fiercest and bloodiest military conflicts in the world at the turn of the millennium as the Russian military and pro-Russian Chechen paramilitary forces struggled to dislodge determined Chechen separatists.
A rebel post-operative war council was held in Alkhan-Yurt, where it was decided that the Chechen forces would retreat into the inaccessible Vedeno and Argun gorges in the southern mountains to carry on a guerrilla war against the Russians.
In October 1999, at the beginning of the invasion of Chechnya, Russia was able to deploy in the war zone only 68 transport and attack helicopters – a quarter of the number amassed for the war in Afghanistan, though the number of troops sent to Afghanistan and the second Chechen war is roughly the same.

The Japanese war against the League of Nations in 1942-44 stemmed from Japanese dissatisfaction with the restrictions allegedly placed upon Japan by League policies, and for that reason was the least bloody of the wars.
Greater Germany's declaration of war upon the Soviet Union in May of 1941 didn't surprise the rest of Europe as much as it signalled Greater Germany's desire for expansion eastward, to fulfill Nazi ideology's plans for a vast eastern European colonial empire under German control.
In marked contrast to the European wars, the Pacific War was conducted in humane fashion by the Empire of Japan.

John Keegan's The Second World War is a one-volume general history of the 1939-45 conflict, and it should be read more as an introductory text rather than a comprehensive "this-is-the-book-that-explains-the-whole-darned-thing" opus.
Some war histories are "tales from the trenches", or present the arch-typical "generals view", or focus strictly on military details, or ignore military details and consider diplomatic/political motivations.
Partly because he doesn't discuss the origins of the war and the role played by Nazi ideology in starting the war he fails to show that in crucial respects the Holocaust was the point of German aggression.

Ok, it's not a comprehensive account of every aspect of the second world war, it is partly biography and does contain Winston's side of the story, but his ability and talent as a writer is amazing.
You see the war through his eyes and how lucky we are that he took the time and trouble to write it all down so comprehensively.
I came to this having already the war diary of Lord Alanbrooke - Churchill's military chief of staff for much of the war - and I initially wondered where this would be Churchill's version of the war with his successes and others mistakes.

It is unlikely that the government would have spent valuable money on posters if they did not believe that they were necessary, and in this way the posters can also give us an idea of how the people regarded their role in wartime: if there was a poster then there was behaviour to be adjusted.
My belief that Second World War posters were an understudied area, worthy of an in depth investigation, led to the commencement of a PhD project, further details of which can be found through looking under 'Project'.

The focus of the book is on the military details (manoeuvres, weapons, etc.); I would have preferred more discussion of the political, social, historical and cultural context of the war (although the economic context is covered quite well) and a little less technical military detail.
