On 4 June was fought the Battle of Hohenfriedberg or Striegau, the greatest victory as yet of Frederick's career, and, of all his battles, excelled perhaps by Leuthen and Rossbach only.
On 11 February a most confused battle was fought, in which the van and centre of the British fleet was engaged with the rear and centre of the allies.
From 1747 until the close of the War in October 1748 the naval policy of the British government, without reaching a high level, was yet more energetic and coherent.

Historical Biographies, Nova Scotia: Marquis de Jonquière (1685-1752).
La Jonquière, it would appear, was held little responsible for the d'Anville disaster of 1746, for, he was outfitted once again and put in command of a large convoy, a fleet of vessels, a number of which were meant for Quebec.
An English fleet of men-of-war were to come upon them just after they left France, off the north west corner of Spain, The Battle of Cape Finisterre (April, 1747) was thereafter to unfold.
The French came off second best; Jonquière was wounded, captured and brought to England, there to spend two years as a prisoner.

Bold Hawke   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Lehr/Best: "This battle was recorded in British history as one of the greatest naval victories of all time." Hawke had been driven to Torbay by a November gale, giving the French a chance to sail from Brest (Source: Royal Navy site re Royal Naval History "The Battle of Quiberon Bay 1759").
Torbay is in Devon, on the English Channel, though it may have tickled Newfoundlanders to transfer the base in their mind's eye to Torbay, seven miles north of St John's.
During the Seven Years War (1756-1763) he failed in an attack on Rochefort, but his win at Quiberon Bay was the most important naval event of the war and eliminated any chance of a French invasion of Britain.
