This "average" (arithmetic mean) income is higher than most people's incomes, because high income outliers skew the result higher (in contrast, the median income "resists" such skew).
However, this "average" says nothing about the number of people near the median income (nor does it say anything about the modal income that most people are near).
Average is derived from Romance avaria, a 'tax'; this is in turn connected with the Arabic or Turkish avaria or avania of the same meaning.

Sabermetrics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For instance, batting average is considered to be a statistic of limited usefulness because it turns out to be a poor predictor of a team's ability to score runs.
Sabermetrics is concerned both with determining the value of a player in a season gone by, and with trying to predict the value of a player in the future based on his past performances.
For example, a player with a high batting average one year may have been very valuable to his team, but batting average is known to be a volatile stat and relying on it to remain high in future years is often not a good principle.

There's one major problem with dead-ball era stats: we lack caught stealing data for many of those years, meaning that the secondary averages for many of the players in that era are artificially inflated.

The statistic covered the three primary elements of offense outside of average--power, walks, and offensive speed--and had the added feature that a league-average figure for secondary average would be almost the same as a league-average figure for batting average.
Secondary average has had more of an impact on baseball analysis than you might think.
