In June 1972, General Secord was assigned as a staff assistant in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Washington, D.C. His duties included serving as desk officer for Laos, Thailand and Vietnam under the assistant secretary of Defense for international security affairs.
Secord pled guilty to one felony count of false statements to Congress and on 24th January, 1990 he was sentenced to two years probation.

The advance warning may have had an effect on the outcome of the subsequent Battle of Beaver Dams the following day, when FitzGibbon and his Indian allies surrounded the Americans and forced Boerstler to surrender.
