Further interpretation of Secret Mark in a context within Canonical Mark, suggests a correspondence between the youth in Secret Mark, and the mysterious almost-naked figure who is in the company of Jesus but flees when he is arrested at Mark 14:51, and also with the figure present in the empty tomb at Mark 16:5.

The gospel itself is anonymous, but as early as Papias in the early 2nd century, a text was attributed to Mark, a disciple of Peter, who is said to have recorded the Apostle's discourses.

Mark is possibly the easiest gospel recognizable as an artistic creation of a particular culture of people at a particular period in the ancient world.

Then, in the very brief second excerpt from the secret gospel, Jesus is said to have rejected three women; with the homosexual overtones of the previous passage still echoing in the ears this rejection of the women sounds to the modern reader like a deliberate choice of individual sexual orientation.

Although Clement states otherwise, it is likely that Secret Mark was written first, and the esoteric passages later removed to form canonical Mark, leaving some strange rifts in the Markan text.
The longer pericope from Secret Mark is a parallel of John's Lazarus story, not found anywhere in the synoptics.
With the information gleaned from Secret Mark, it is obvious that the youth was being baptized, and that whoever edited the secret gospel to create our canonical Mark failed to completely extract him from the text.

For its part, the version of the story from Secret Mark has its own peculiarities not found in John, such as the initiation of the young man into the "mystery of God's domain." The basic story, however, probably derives from the common stock of miracle stories available to both Mark and John, or their sources.
Above we noted that Salome is mentioned in Secret Mark, and it is noteworthy that Salome is absent in the lists of women who went to the tomb in Matthew and Luke; it is possible that Matthew and Luke relied on a version of Mark without any mention of Salome.
Thus, Secret Mark may be an important witness to the textual history of the Gospel of Mark.

The secret passages were only intended to be read by those who had been thoroughly initiated into the mysteries of the ancient Alexandrian church, not by all Christians.
If the Secret Gospel of Mark is authentic, then two other possibilities are reasonable: 1.) it was written by the same person who wrote the Gospel of Mark, as Clement argues; or 2.) it was added later by some unknown writer, presumably from the Alexandria Church.

Only the heretics say there is secret doctrine from the apostles which you must know to correctly understand the scripture.
Since this document simply talks about a secret gospel of Mark we will not know for sure until the actual document in question is found.

An anthroposophist named Karl Koenig, an outstanding, humble servant of humanity, taught a course in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1962 in which he brought this progressive series to our attention and showed how it was preparing for the initiation of Lazarus as the Evangelist John.

In the course of my recent research re: the compositional history of the Gospel of Mark, I have reread Morton Smith's two books on the subject, after many years (see the bibliographical notes at the end).
Since these two texts, the letter itself, and the gospel fragments as given by Clement, are composed in completely different styles, and using very different vocabularies, in order to forge them Smith would have had to be an expert on both Clement and Mk.
The excerpt from the letter of Clement, itself, is much longer than the gospel fragments, and it would have been a lot harder to forge credibly.
