Secret Messages is a meticulously researched, carefully reasoned, and well-written account of the United States government's attack on the diplomatic communications of foreign governments from 1930 to 1945, an attack that produced the most valuable secret intelligence on foreign relations and national security that the United States possessed during this period.
Secret Messages is one of the first works to make extensive use of the Historic Cryptographic Collection (HCC), an enormous collection of nearly 1500 boxes of documents relating to United States cryptography and cryptanalysis before 1945 that was deposited into the United States National Archives by the National Security Agency in 1996.
Secret Messages is a significant contribution to the laying of the groundwork for a thorough revision of the history of United States foreign policy and national security policy during a most critical period.

The album, 'Secret Messages', was released in 1983 as a single album because the record company felt it would be too expensive to fund a double record.
The "where's he gone?" message is very ironic, because a few months after the release of this album Kelly Groucutt left the band, blaming internal differences for his decision.
This message has not yet been found on the single version of the album, and it is likely that it was included on one of the songs that was taken from the double album.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 10 -- A new technique sends secret messages under other people's noses so cleverly that it would impress James Bond--yet the procedure is so firmly rooted in the real world that it can be instantly used with existing equipment and infrastructure.
The intended recipient decodes the message by employing information on how the secret message was originally spread out and using an optical device to compress the message back to its original state.
The method is very secure: even if eavesdroppers knew a secret transmission was taking place, any slight imperfection in their knowledge of how the secret signal was spread out would make it too hard to pick out amidst the more intense public signal.

SECRET MESSAGES is loaded with harmonic ear candy despite a couple clunkers like "Train of Gold" and "Time After Time" (which was not included on the original US vinyl release that I grew up with).
In my opinion, the outstanding cuts are "Secret Messages" (mesmerizing harmonies), "Bluebird" (bittersweet pop), "Four Little Diamonds" (the real rocker on the album), "Take Me On and On" and "Stranger" (one beautiful, wistful song).
In the end, "Secret Messages" certainly doesn't entirely hit the nail on the head, but it's still quite a satisfying piece of work that's highly recommended.
