Secret Wars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Secret Wars (full title Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars) is the name of a Mattel toy line and a 12-issue Marvel Comics comic book miniseries which were produced between 1984 and 1985.
Although Secret Wars was launched almost a year before Crisis on Infinite Earths (Secret Wars #1 was cover dated May, 1984, while Crisis #1 is cover dated April, 1985) the two have been compared to each other since the time of their first release.
Secret Wars was the first of a new breed of large crossover events which would become a staple of both Marvel and DC's publishing schedule from that year on.

There is another article about Secret Wars, the comic book published by Marvel Comics.
The Secret War was the Lao front of the Second Indochina War and lasted 13 years (1962-1975).
Using a proxy force of some thirty thousand Laotians on the ground, mostly Hmong tribesman, supported in the air by Air America and the Royal Lao Air Force, the CIA fought North Vietnamese units in Laos and the communist Pathet Lao to a standstill.

We are given access to Nick Fury's secret files and personal notes as he muses over what has happened to bring him to this impasse, and which members of the Marvel superhero community should help bail him out.
All of it is taken from the regular Secret War series, or is finished art that did not make the final cut.
The quarterly Secret War is running so late that Marvel felt obliged to put out this title to remind us that Secret War continues to exist and they will get around to finishing it eventually.

Now we find ourselves a year and a half into the war that would not end (the fictional current one, not the real current one), so it is time to look back at the previous pluralized Wars, and determine which of their past mistakes will be repeated this time.
Secret Wars was (see, that pluralization is really tricky) not the worst Marvel crossover (the very existence of Secret Wars II elevates the first one), but upon re-reading, the mocking opportunities just kept presenting themselves to me. I will say that it did accomplish its ultimate goal...
Secret Wars II is probably one of the silliest crossovers ever, but a couple of the crossover issue are actually quite good.

In Marvel comics, the Secret War (and Secret War II) were limited series used as an excuse to drag a whole bunch of heroes and villains across the universe to make them fight.

Secret War is by no means bad, however, and I wouldn't want to give you the impression that I think it is. Paired with the incredible art of Gabriele Dell'Otto, Bendis' writing is elevated to a level I don't think it would have achieved on its own for this book.
The action and effect is conveyed, sure, but it becomes clear that Secret War is more and more being given into the hands of a talented artist to showcase his incredible talent than it is to really tell a tale.

As Shultz explains in "The Secret War Against Hanoi," that tenet got the United States into the biggest set of covert actions undertaken during the Cold War.
Shultz subjects the secret effort, which lasted from the early 1960s to 1972, to a searching, critical, dispassionate analysis.
Shultz's unblinkered account leads to the conclusion that, however brave and potentially useful it may have been, the secret war against Hanoi was close to a wasted effort.

As Spider-Man finds himself being haunted by memories of a battle that he can't remember, we see him pay a visit to Daredevil who was present in the memory flashes that are plaguing Peter, but Matt claims to have no memory of the battle.
My favourite issue of the miniseries largely because Spider-Man is at the centre of this issue, and his reactions to the cloak and dagger elements of this story bring a nicely grounded feel to the material.
Now most of this issue is set in the present day, so we don't really learn anything new about the "secret war" beyond the fact that Spider-Man and Daredevil's memories of their participation had been erased, while Captain America seems to remember his role quite well.

Go through the comic without reading the dialogue and see how much Michael Lark has to manipulate angle, perspective, posture, subtle body movements, and facial expressions to keep things active and interesting.
We still don't know what the Secret War is. (We barely know in the Secret War Mini-Series.) We don't know where Luke is. We don't know what Fury's done.

Secret War #1 Review - Silver Bullet Comics
I’ve often been of the mind that painted comics sap much of the dynamism and attractive simplicity from the superhero genre (for a recent case in point see the current Wolverine & Captain America miniseries).
However, whereas Mack was crippled by his Echo miniseries' rescheduling and insertion into the main Daredevil title, finding himself less appreciated by that more mainstream audience, this quarterly title will have time and space to breathe and will hopefully find the more discerning readership it deserves.
Another great idea, and one that goes some way to justifying the high price of this issue, is the inclusion of additional material at the back of the comic.

I've been racking my brain for a while now to put my finger on it, but it eludes me. I'm still intrigued enough by the story to continue reading the series, but so far, this Bendis book lacks the sort of hook that usually has me riveted and eager to devour the next chapter.
The overall look and feel of this comic book reminds me of the various titles Marvel released in the mid 1990s to capitalize on the popularity of Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross's Marvels.
