Secret Window - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Secret Window is a 2004 thriller starring Johnny Depp and John Turturro.
It was written and directed by David Koepp, based on the novella Secret Window, Secret Garden by Stephen King.
This one is perfect." It is then revealed to us that by growing and consuming corn from the garden where his wife and her lover are buried, Mort is slowly destroying all the evidence needed to incriminate him bit by bit.

Melody of a Secret Garden by Scarlett Burns
As he kneeled in front of the window, beginning to close it, an image of Amy flew into his mind unbidden and unwelcome, causing him to shut the window a little more firmly than what was necessary.
Within his garden there was one single spot, a small section in the center of his swaying stalks of corn, that pulled his eyes toward it like a magnet.
Stepping within the garden his hands gently ran across the leafy stalks, toying with them as he made his way deeper within them… his humming becoming so soft that it seemed to be swept off his lips by the cool night breeze instantly.

"Secret Window" Movie Review by Kevin Carr - 7M Pictures
Here’s the ultimate irony of “Secret Window.” Shooter claims that Rainey changed the ending of his story, and his one demand is that Rainey fix it.
The movie “Secret Window” ends differently than the original Stephen King novella “Secret Window, Secret Garden.” Sure, this isn’t as shocking as “Project X” preaching about how wrong it is to abuse lab animals, then being found to have abused the trained chimps on set - but it still has a certain level of hypocrisy.
However, the worst sin of omission in “Secret Window” is the removal of the fact that Rainey had actually plagiarized in the past.

Secret Window is not a bad film, but is familiar, predictable.

TheMovieBoy Review - Secret Window (2004)
Based on the novella, "Secret Window, Secret Garden," "Secret Window" is a taut, spine-tingling thriller, the most assured and classy adaptation of Stephen King's horror-themed work since 1990's "Misery." Translating King to the screen is an often difficult undertaking, because what works tremendously on the page tends to come off cheesy or overdone on celluloid.
"Secret Window" mostly avoids these trappings (save for a key climactic scene), in no small part thanks to the intelligent, stylish crafting of writer-director David Koepp (1999's "Stir of Echoes") and yet another marvelously nuanced turn from Johnny Depp (2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl").
"Secret Window" may not be as surprising from a plot standpoint as director David Koepp intended, but it does not detract from the bigger picture.

 SECRET WINDOW - DVD
Secret Window is a checklist for Stephen King fans in exactly the same way his bloated fiction from the last ten years is a rehash of past material (and like old King material is a rehash of classic EC Comics/"Outer Limits" plots).
Secret Window seems to know, at least Depp and co-star John Turturro seem to know, that it belongs to a specific genre of slick Stephen King camp garbage and so plays it for broad yuks/yucks and the occasional jump scare.
Secret Window is a Frankenstein's monster of mismatched parts, a shuddering celluloid chimera that takes the path of past success to easy gain and filthy lucre--a film about plagiarism that plagiarizes the highlights of its own oeuvre with a venal dedication.

 Secret Window
Secret Window is the best film of this century and of all the other centuries before and after that.
Secret Window is a bit predictable (I wasn't surprised one bit by the "twist" ending), a bit unbelievable (call the police, move out, kill the guy, whatever and wouldn't most writers have copies of their published works on hand?) and typically Stephen King: high on suspense, low on substance.
Secret Window is classic Stephen King, not in the sense that it will ever be immortalized as a masterpiece of cinema or revered by movie fans for its pace and direction.

Based on Stephen King's novella Secret Window, Secret Garden, the film is a thriller of sorts, about the frustration that a writer faces and the dark places to which it leads him.
It's important to note the Secret Window is a sorbet of a film, a light refreshment that really isn't hearty enough to satisfy, but is enjoyable in its own right.

Johnny Depp stars in Secret Window (2004) as Mort Rainey, a writer holed away in a secluded cabin, pathetically mourning the sordid unraveling of his marriage.
Secret Window adds one more twig to the impenetrable thicket of movies based on Stephen King source material over the past three decades (by IMDb's account, there have been 80 King-related productions since Carrie in 1976).
Although King's source novella "Secret Window, Secret Garden" was published in 1990 (in the collection Four Past Midnight), this film adaptation suffers from similarities to preceding King film projects Misery (1990) and The Dark Half (1993).

DVD Verdict Review - Secret Window
In Secret Window, successful but now slovenly author Morton "Mort" Rainey has been accused of all of the above, unexpectedly confronted by an imposing figure in a wide-brim hat with a relentless drive for restitution in light of Rainey's apparent unforgivable transgression.
Secret Window, by that criteria, succeeds reasonably well; not stunningly, mind you, but engaging all the same.
However, given its effort to offer a generally faithful adaptation of a published work and since the borrowed elements were sanctioned by the originator of the source material, this court is inclined to show a generous amount of leniency despite this unorthodox behavior.

Rainey, of course, thinks the guy is a crackpot and informs the stranger that his story, Secret Window, Secret Garden, was published in a magazine at least two years before Shooter’s claim.
“Secret Window” had me for the first two-thirds of the film but it falls apart into typical King-isms in the last third and the ending was telegraphed long before the finale.
But as soon as Koepp literally tips his hat, the jig is up and "Secret Window" derails into the worst kind of horror schlock with ugly, exploitative violence and a sick joke coda that's simply silly.

Secret Window Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Secret Window doesn't quite live up to the same level of scrutiny on re-examination, but it doesn't really matter, because Johnny Depp and John Turturro are so damned good that the whole thing (well, most of it) is entirely engaging.
Secret Window's biggest problem is also one of its biggest assets.
Shooter has a manuscript that is almost a verbatim copy of Mort's published story, "Secret Window, Secret Garden." That of course proves nothing—and although Mort wants to shrug off whole incident, Shooter proves to be persistent and increasingly dangerous as the movie progresses.

Movieman's Guide to the Movies - Secret Window (2004)
The secret window, by the way, is in reference to a window that Mort's wife finds hidden by a dresser when they had first moved into the cabin.
This window overlooks a garden where Amy mentions that she would one day like to plant a garden.
Secret Window has two things going for it: 1) Johnny Depp seems to always deliver an excellent performance whether he's playing a rogue CIA agent or an eye-liner wearing pirate, he seems to be one of the few actors around to be able to play any role no matter how silly.

Secret Window review (2004) Depp - Qwipster's Movie Reviews
Sadly, the predictability weighs in heavily in why Secret Window is a mediocre thriller, and the fact that it isn't particularly scary.
It's not surprising, since this material is fairly weak to begin with, and only the colorful performances by Depp and Turturro spark any life into it, so when they are forced to change their personalities toward the final scenes, it all falls apart.
Secret Window is a flawed but interesting movie, and although I don't really recommend it as a good film, I also wouldn't call it was a waste of time either.

While Secret Window is in many ways a faithful adaptation of “SW, SG,” there are some major changes, and it should come as no surprise at this point that the biggest of those changes occur at the end.
One of the big secrets of the novella is that Mort really did steal a story from someone at one point; only not the story Shooter claims is plagiarized, and it happened back during his college years.

Ghost writer: Mort Rainey (Johnny Depp, pictured) is a writer accused of plagiarism by a creepy man (John Turturro) in "Secret Window." The film, based on Stephen King's novella "Four Past Midnight: Secret Window, Secret Garden," opens Friday.
"Secret Window" is a tribute to serial recycler Stephen King's gift for reworking themes from his most successful works and reselling them - and to star Johnny Depp's ability to find yet another character he can play without having to get a haircut.
For the 1991 novella "Four Past Midnight: Secret Window, Secret Garden," King revisited the solitary, blocked writer of "The Shining" (1977), made him successful and gave him a tormentor, a la "Misery" (1987).

Secret Window - Movie Review (Secret Window, Secret Garden )
Plausibility clearly isn't one of the predominant driving forces behind 'Secret Window'.
When Turturro's character John Shooter first turns up on Mort's doorstep to accuse him of plagiarising a story written a decade earlier, basic questions like "what story?", "who are you?" and "what in the name of sweet Daisy the cow are you talking about?" seem to slip our protagonist's mind.
'Secret Window' is yet ANOTHER big screen spin on a Stephen King tale, and yet ANOTHER one in which the main character is a struggling writer (remember 'Misery' and The Shining?).
