Released in 1994, “Secret World Live” captures a bearded Gabriel and the band performing in Italy, the heart of Gabriel fandom on the winter leg of the 1993’s Secret World Tour.
“Secret World Live” has recently been reissued on DVD and is looking all the better for it, with a variety of extra features including a nice interview with Gabriel, going behind the scenes of the show.
Highlights include Come talk to Me, Steam, San Jacinto, Secret World and Digging in the Dirt which sees Gabriel with a video camera strapped to his head, filming unsightly close-ups of his eyes, nose and mouth, projected on to the huge rotating screen.

Peter Gabriel - Secret World - Live [1994] DVD at Shop Ireland
Secret World, and Peter Gabriel's 1980's - 1990's vintage work was always lighter than the ascendant Nirvarna's et al of the time, but that doesn's make it any the worse.
Following on nicely from Secret World (albeit after a 10 year wait!), this looks set to be a remarkable show judging by the sneak preview we see here.
This DVD of the 1993 Secret World Tour re-lives many of Peter Gabriel's best loved songs with the great sound only a live proformance gives, mixed brilliantly into 5.1.

Secret World enters an inner realm that is knowable only through the range of emotion it gives rise to, joining ecstasy and agony into music that avoids being larger than life and instead is as large as life itself.
A mastersroke for the Secret World Tour was employing the services of set designer, Robert Lepage whose visual effects and concepts have a similar emotional footing to much of PG's musical output.
Despite what are probably the whingeings of a purist, the standout feature of Secret World Live is that, despite masses of electronica required to create this sound in a live setting, the organic nature of band and music is still the overriding effect.

"Secret World" is the second of two live albums released by Gabriel, and by far the better of the two.
The first, "Plays Live," was released twelve years earlier, and "Secret World" reveals an artist who had made tremendous strides in the meantime.
True, Gabriel most likely did not want to repeat himself extensively from "Plays Live," but this record is so good, it leaves you begging to hear the versions of his earlier material as he played them on this tour.

I own the DVD of SWL as well, which is incredible in itself, but unfortunately cuts off some of the best parts of certain songs - like a young Paula Cole shaking the tree with her incredible voice.
It is not your typical greatest hits + a few obscure new songs, but rather the concert flows like a conversation, almost leading the listener into believing that she is listening to a concept album.
"Secret World" live documents the tour for "Us"-- the setlist is biased towards later material, seven songs from "Us", four from "So", "Shaking the Tree" and one new song leave only two tracks from the early part of Gabriel's career-- brief instrumental "Slow Marimbas" from "Birdy" and "Solsbury Hill" from his debut album.

Of course I couldn't forget la piece de resistance (Secret World) this atmospheric track that has a clear Genesis influence is incredible, Peter does a fair job at the keyboards and the joke with bag is the perfect first ending for a concert.
There's one point on "Secret World" where Peter takes a kind of sutcase, puts it on the floor, opens it and it seems the whole band got into it (There was really a hole on the floor and the sutcase and the guys got under the stage throuhg the hole in the sutcase).

Secret World Live was recorded from two nights shows that were performed on 16 and 17 November 1993 at Palasport Nuovo, in Modena, Italy.
The visually dazzling stage production, and emotionally charged musical performances certainly live up to the hype and praise that has been bestowed on this tour, but the overall production of this DVD is a big disappointment.
I don't automatically dislike the use of recorded vocal tracks, they can be effective in recreating harmony or background vocals when they are impractical to reproduce live, but not just because you want to be able to prance around the stage without having to worry about hitting all of your lead vocals.

Us is obviously constructed as a coherent album with a consistent ambient world beat atmosphere, although there's ample variation in the form of the upbeat material and the countryish ballad 'Washing of the Water'.
Like most live albums, Secret World Live is largely superfluous, but I’m enough of a Gabriel fan to sit through it quite happily.
Some of the low key songs like ‘Washing Of The Water’ and ‘Blood Of Eden’ lose their intimacy live, but complicated pieces like ‘Come Talk To Me’ and 'Secret World’ are delivered effortlessly.
