SPC is the oldest and largest organisation in the 10-member The Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific (CROP) [1] (http://www.spc.int/piocean/CROP/spocc.htm) is an inter-organisational consultative process which aims to prevent either overlaps, or gaps, appearing between the work-programmes of its various members.

The Secretariat of the Pacific Community or SPC is a regional intergovernmental organisation whose membership includes both nations and territories.
This constraint on discussion (particularly the constraint on discussing nuclear weapons testing in the region) led, eventually, to the creation of the South Pacific Forum, which not only excluded the more distant "metropolitan" powers of France, UK and USA, but also their Pacific Island territories.
SPC was the first CROP organisation to be headed by a woman.

Communities variously build watch houses; and use patrol canoes and regular watchmen to monitor illegal activities in their coastal zones and marine protected areas.

A regional workshop on “Strengthening Partnerships for Eliminating Violence Against Women” was jointly organized by UNIFEM, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community from 17-19 February 2003.
The biggest challenge faced by women in many of the Pacific island societies is that of being acknowledged as equal partners in social, cultural, political and economic development in their communities, countries and territories.
As a critical area of focus under the Pacific Platform for Action, the Secretariat for the Pacific Community was encouraged to further the activities to eliminate violence against women and children.

Senior government officials from more than 20 Pacific countries and territories will be attending a meeting on "Alcohol and Health in the Pacific" at the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) headquarters in Noumea, New Caledonia, from 28 to 30 September 2004.
The meeting, the first Pacific regional meeting on alcohol in 20 years, is a collaboration between the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the New Zealand Ministry of Health.

On 6 December 1999 during its conference in Papeete, French Polynesia, the Pacific Community, formerly the South Pacific Commission (SPC), adopted a new flag (sometimes described as the flag of the Pacific Community, at other times described as the flag of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community).

The Oceanic Fisheries Programme (OFP), formerly known as the Tuna and Billfish Assessment Programme (TBAP) was established by the 1980 South Pacific Conference to continue the work initiated by its predecessor project, the Skipjack Survey and Assessment Programme (SSAP).
In the early 1980s, the main priority of the OFP was the establishment of a regional catch and effort database based primarily on catch and effort logsheets provided to SPC by member countries and territories.
The Tuna Ecology and Biology (TEB) section of the OFP undertakes analyses to understand the biological parameters and the environmental processes that influence the productivity of tuna and billfish populations and that are fundamental for stocks assessment and modelling.

The first SPC heads of fisheries conference, which took place in 1952, brought together 16 participants including the representatives of the then six metropolitan powers (Australia, France, New Zealand, United Kingdom, USA, and Netherlands [the Netherlands no longer have any Pacific territories]), the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation and the SPC Secretariat.
The third SPC heads of fisheries conference therefore took place in 1968 with the main goal of redefining the organisation's role in the fisheries sector and launching a new large-scale project, the South Pacific International Fisheries Development Agency (SPIFDA) to be based at the SPC.
It is part of a network of regional fisheries meetings organised by the Forum Fisheries Agency, the new FAO office in the South Pacific and, more recently, as part of the international consultations designed to prepare an agreement on the management of stocks of migratory fish species in the western and central Pacific Ocean.
