Secretary (2002)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
This is a film about what many consider to be deviant behavior (sado-masochism and bondage-discipline, not your usual Hollywood romantic fun and games) that most will concur is uncommon in the workplace.
The lawyer and his secretary are sexualized in a way few have experienced and those who have don't talk to folks outside their circle.
A very different film that I rate 8/10 on a personal scale where I value the deep and tortured acting projecting the absorbing conflict of this sexualized working (initially) relationship.

Film Reviews on CLUAS - Secretary
These menial duties are made more demanding when the secretary in question has her arms suspended in some form of S and M crucifixion manacle, but nevertheless she executes the task with aplomb and with no small degree of satisfaction, one feels.
The secretary is so taken with the idea of it all that she voluntarily dumps her self-mutilation kit into a river.
Given the emotional disparities of the film’s protagonists, the theme of the story could be that there is someone out there for everyone, so in essence what we have here is a flly comical love story.

Picturing Justice. Secretary by Rob Waring
This film ought to be part of any course or program intended to prepare lawyer for the challenges of running a practice without trampling the self-respect of their staff.
Yet, this film challenges modern boundaries by presenting its heroine as a special case, a former mental patient whose illness is far worse than her submission to the obsessive domination of her boss.
For example, although the secretary quickly grows to need the abuse dealt by her boss, deliberately making mistakes to bring on his wrath, off screen that perception is a huge part of the problem in abusive situations.

 EvilSponge: Film: Secretary
It could be that he insists his secretary use an old-fashioned typewriter.
Some critics have said that the film is too slow at times, but I find that director Steven Shainberg employs hesitation and trepidation very artfully.
In the final analysis, Secretary is a love story because two very damaged people fall in love and discover that their imperfections fit each other perfectly.

IMDb user comments for Secretary (2002)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
She goes for the interview, and after seeing the previous secretary run out in tears and hearing the questions in the interview, it is apparent that the lawyer, E. Edward Grey (James Spader), is a bit of a creep.
The early scenes in the film may be a bit disturbing for some in the audience, mainly because we feel a bit like voyeurs peering in on the couple, almost as if they were zoo animals or subjects in some sort of psycho-sexual experiment.
The film actually isn't quite as naughty as many people think it thinks it is, but the truth is that the sadomasochistic area of the film isn't really all that important.

Guardian Unlimited Film | Reviews | Secretary (2001)
A film that almost seems to be propaganda for the oppression of women.
Secretary is both erotic and witty yet never overtly sexual or titillating and remains a film for those who can appreciate an original slant on the exhausted subject of love.
Secretary is terrible drivel with clunky, unnecessary dialogue plonked straight from the novel into the script.

BBC - Films - review - Secretary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Maggie Gyllenhaal plays Lee, a self-harming alumnus of a psychiatric institution, who lands a job as a secretary for an eccentric lawyer, Edward Grey - played with his customary louche vacancy by James Spader (who is to indie sex drama what John Wayne is to westerns).
"Secretary" also services an impoverished idea of love - focused exclusively around sexual expression, ignoring facets such as companionship, compassion, sharing, and having a laugh (these characteristics are perhaps suggested in Lee's relationship with Jeremy Davies' character - which comes a poor second-best to her work-based rough-housing).

Secretary is not a movie for my parents.
Though there are many actors in the film, 95% of the screen time is devoted to James Spader (Crash, Sex Lies and Videotape) in the role of E. Edward Gray and Gyllenhall (Donnie Darko, Cecil B. Demented).
I guess I would sum it up by saying that Secretary takes the joke we've all make that says "You've been bad and you need to be spanked" and inserts into it two people who can't wait to make their own punch line.

A touching interview with Junge from an earlier documentary film ends the film, and Alexandra Maria Lara, the actress playing her part in the film, provides a voiceover prologue, which points out that she naïvely agreed to be Hitler's secretary from early 1942 to April 30, 1945, when Hitler (played by Bruno Ganz) committed suicide.
The film provides many events that are familiar to historians and some grisly details that filmviewers may not want to know about.

Steven Shainberg's strange and wonderful "Secretary" spells out the letters and more, but not in an orderly, comfortable way -- it's more as if he were spilling them like dice out of a cup, as a kind of jarring reassurance that they're not going to immediately make sense to us.
"Secretary" -- which was adapted, with significant changes, from a terrific short story by Mary Gaitskill -- is also extremely funny in places, as the truest movies about sex must always be.
One day, he circles one of her typing errors with one of those thick red pens he's been hoarding -- at last, we know what they're for -- and calls her into his office, where he orders her to place the letter on his desk, bend over and read it aloud.

Secretary Review Movie Review Film Secretary: Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Spader, Lesley Ann Warren, Jeremy Davies; Review ...
Secretary is a sardonic and grossly captivating movie that isn't afraid to explore the tenacious force that is the raging libido.
Shainberg is masterful in the way he manipulates the sexual tension of his precarious protagonists because he is suggesting that the risky roller-coaster ride of this pair's union is fueled by the credible concoction of sheer excitement, suppressed angst, insurmountable boredom and a dangerous dose of uncertainty pertaining to low self-esteem matters.
Secretary packs a provocative punch and its raucous appeal is in the ability to convey an unusual sense of disillusionment with the pressures of opening up to the rigors of life's monotonous twist and turns.

Pleasantville for the sadomasochism set, Steven Shainberg's Secretary is a gentle sexual-awakening fable set in a peculiar fairytale hyper-reality reminiscent of the saturated inward-gazing milieu of David Cronenberg's Spider.
Shainberg's extremely loose adaptation of Mary Gaitskill's interesting short story "Secretary" is an exercise in anthropology told through the mirror darkly of fetish and the extremes of abnormal behaviour.
More, Secretary wishes to impart a kind of indictment of the audience--an invitation to reassess one's personal foibles and sex-play against societal norms and the lies of normalcy told in polite company.
