New Zealand’s Minister for Environment, Hon Simon Upton, has met the Secretary General of the Forum Secretariat, Mr Noel Levi, CBE, for talks on environmental issues and other matters of mutual interest.
The 16-member Forum group, of which New Zealand is also a member, is seeking to have a vulnerability index adopted by the UN to be used when classifying countries that may need special aid and trade concessions.

In March 2003, 39 Mohua were transferred to the island and last summer there were frequent sightings of adults feeding chicks, signalling a successful breeding season.
The Mohua was once common in South Island forests, but a dramatic decline in numbers over the last 30 years, largely because of forest clearance and predation by rats, stoats and possums, has seen them disappear from three-quarters of their former range.
Now, fewer than 5,000 Mohua are thought to remain on the mainland at isolated beech forests and DOC is intensively trapping stoats and rats at two of the Mohua's strongholds in the Hawdon and Hurunui valleys.

The S Island is over 900 Km from end to end, so that density is low, and traffic sparse away from cities.
These were adequate 90 % of the time, but we preferred NZ Government road maps, showing services available at each town - we were caught out a few times with no shops to buy food at the end of a day, misled by the AA map.

He played a significant role in the peace process on Bougainville well before he became secretary general to the Commonwealth and continued to assist PNG at the Commonwealth towards the negotiations for peace on the island.
