Seven Foreign Secretaries have been Fellows of the Royal Society.[1] One of them, Balfour, was later a Chairman both of this institution and of the Medical Research Council; and another, Lord Salisbury, was such an enthusiastic amateur scientist that he almost killed himself while experimenting with chemistry.
Work on climate science is therefore at the heart of our efforts this year on climate change, as Presidency of the G8 and of the EU from July.

In San Antonio, Texas, Madeleine Kunin, the Deputy Secretary of Education, has seen firsthand the coming together of the Chamber of Commerce, the University of Texas, the United Way, a major insurance company, and city and county officials -- all citizens doing their part to create early childhood family centers in every neighborhood.
I urge education leaders to look beyond the role of parents as volunteers and fundraisers; to actively incorporate, as so many schools are now doing, parents and other adults into the process of learning.

Higher education only reappeared on the political map for any length of time in the late 1980s, when the Conservative government expanded access to the sector in what one commentator has called "a fit of absent-mindedness." A system designed for an elite was simply stretched to accommodate new students.
Our education reforms are all about the development of an educated citizenry - a democracy in which people are educated in the fullest sense of the world, and able to participate in active self-government.
The development of the policy and funding framework for higher education has been guided by the need to balance the contributions made by individuals who benefit from higher learning; by government in the pursuit of social justice and meaningful social inclusion; and by business and commerce in their interaction with the sector.

He was educated at Radley College in Abingdon, Oxfordshire and the University of Manchester before becoming an MP in 1964 for the Cheshire constituency of Runcorn.
He was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Education and Science in 1978 before being appointed to the department itself when Margaret Thatcher was elected in May 1979.
Thatcher writes in her memoirs that Carlisle ‘had not proved a particularly effective Education Secretary’ and to this effect he was dismissed in the September 1981 Cabinet reshuffle.
