  Passports Required for Air Travel to United States as of January 23, 2007
The Departments of State and Homeland Security announced today that the requirement for citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda to present a passport to enter the United States when arriving by air from any part of the Western Hemisphere will begin on January 23, 2007.
The first phase involves travel by air and requires all citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda to have a passport or other accepted document that establishes the bearer's identity and nationality to enter or re-enter the United States from within the Western Hemisphere.
As early as January 1, 2008, U.S. citizens traveling between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea could be required to present a valid U.S. passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security.

Canada's Secretary of State for External Affairs was, from 1909 to 1993, the member of the Cabinet of Canada responsible for overseeing the federal government's international relations and the former Department of External Affairs.
The first two Secretaries of State for External Affairs from 1909 until 1912 (Charles Murphy under Sir Wilfrid Laurier and William James Roche under Sir Robert Borden) concurrently served as Secretary of State for Canada.
Noted Secretaries of State for External Affairs have included Lester Pearson, Paul Joseph James Martin, Allan MacEachen, Mitchell Sharp, and Joe Clark.

Canada's control of her external trade may be said to begin with the customs tariff of 1859, which for the first time levied duties on goods imported from the mother country.
In 1908 the principle was conceded that, so far as political treaties were concerned, Canada was not to be bound by any imperial treaty unless she signified her assent to it; and in regard to commercial matters, Canada had before this asserted her right to negotiate, direct with foreign states.
It is significant of the importance of the new department that the portfolio of secretary of state for external affairs has since that time been invariably attached to the office of prime minister.

 Travel Accommodation Announced June 8, 2007
The U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security announced Friday, June 8, that U.S. citizens traveling to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or countries in the Caribbean region, who have applied for, but not yet received passports, can re-enter the United States by air.
This accommodation does not mean that Americans are exempt from meeting the entry requirements of Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or countries in the Caribbean region, some of which require a passport, certified birth certificate, or other evidence of citizenship for entry.
U.S. citizens traveling to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or countries in the Caribbean region who have applied for, but not yet received passports, can re-enter the United States by air by presentation of a government issued photo identification and Department of State official proof of application for a passport through September 30, 2007.
