In the federal government of the United States of America, the main role of the United States Secretary of State is to supervise and conduct foreign policy.
In many states the state secretary of state is often third in line to assume the office of governor upon death or resignation of the incumbent, after the lieutenant governor.
During a sede vacante, the former Secretary of State (the appointment expires when the pope dies or resigns) assumes some of the functions of the head of state as a part of a temporary commission.

The Secretary of State for Scotland (Rùnaire Stàite na h-Alba in Scottish Gaelic) is the chief minister in the government of the United Kingdom with responsibilites for Scotland, at the head of the Scotland Office (formerly The Scottish Office).
By 1885 the job had become too onerous and a separate post of Secretary for Scotland was created, which was usually (though not always) in the Cabinet.
Also, John Maitland, 1st Duke of Lauderdale served as Secretary of State for Scotland from 1660 to 1679, but was unique in that sense.
