The post of Secretary of State for Wales came into existence in October of 1964, the first incumbent being Jim Griffiths, MP for Llanelli.
On his departure, the government ceased to look within Wales for the Secretary of State, and the post was increasingly used as a way of getting junior high-fliers into the Cabinet.
The Welsh Office was disbanded but the post of Secretary of State for Wales was retained, as the head of the newly created Wales Office.

The new Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Peter Hain, has arrived in Belfast today.
Mr Hain, who is the Member of Parliament for Neath and replaces the outgoing Paul Murphy in Northern Ireland, also remains Secretary of State for Wales.
He was promoted to the Cabinet in October 2002 when he became Secretary of State for Wales and later became Leader of the House of Commons in June 2003 while retaining his position as Secretary for Wales.
