From the Air Corps of 1939, with 20,000 men and 2,400 planes, to the nearly autonomous AAF of 1944, with almost 2.4 million personnel and 80,000 aircraft, was a remarkable expansion.
The air forces and divisions were divided into a total of 91 wings, called Bombardment, Tactical Reconnaissance, Training or Composite depending on whether their primary intended role was strategic bombing, pursuit, air support, et cetera.
In 1947, the USAFE became a component of the newly-created United States Air Force.

The Secretary of State for Air was a cabinet level British position, in charge of the Air Ministry.
It was created on January 10, 1919 to manage the Royal Air Force.
On April 1, 1964 the Air Ministry was incorporated into the Ministry of Defence and the position of Secretary of State for Air was abolished.

The Oak Ridge Cemetery in Arcadia is the final resting-place of twenty-three RAF cadets who died while in the United States for training.
A special marker at the cemetery recognizes their service and a ceremony is held in their memory each year on Memorial Day.

In the process of training Royal Air Force cadets to fly at the Riddle schools in Arcadia and Clewiston, twenty-three men were killed.
Of that number, two died at Carlstrom Field in Arcadia and the remainder while at the Riddle Field site near Clewiston.
