 Perfect Sound Forever: Herbie Hancock
Headhunters, issued the same year ('73), was notable for three things: personnel changes, an unbelievable re-take on Hancock's "Watermelon Man," and a larger step toward mainstream jazz not untinged of rock influences.
It was actually a lynchpin for the end of the Mwandishi period, the start of a side gig with Maupin (along with others who'd all keep the sobriquet once Hancock exited, then move on to further recordings), and the beginning of a continuation of the Mwandishi ideas under semi-new management.

 Herbie Hancock Summary
Of the three electronically sounded albums, Sextant is probably the most experimental since the Arp synthesizers are used extensively and some advanced improvisation ("post-modal free impressionism") is found on the tracks "Hornets" and "Hidden Shadows" (which is in the meter 19/4).
The album Head Hunters, released in 1973, was a major hit and crossed over to pop audiences, though it prompted criticism from some jazz fans.
Albums such as Monster (1980), Magic Windows (1981), and Lite Me Up (1982) were some of Hancock's most criticized and unwelcomed albums, the market at the time being somewhat saturated with similar pop-jazz hybrids from the likes of former bandmate Freddie Hubbard.

Secrets (Headhunters album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
V.S.O.P. Secrets is a 1976 jazz-funk fusion album by keyboard player Herbie Hancock, with his Headhunters band.
Although summery and mellow, the album was far from lounge music, with some extremely abstract and intense sections, particular in the latter half; it is also entirely instrumental beside the "Jus' keep on doin' it" chants of the opening track.
Subsequent Hancock/Headhunters albums saw the addition of more vocoded lead vocals and disco influences, leaving Secrets as arguably the last major release from The Headhunters as an exploratory jazz ensemble.

Whether by good fortune or through astute observation of the music scene, Hancock's first album with the quartet, Head Hunters, was widely accepted in the burgeoning disco scene and achieved substantial sales.
Certain albums he made, with Chick Corea and with his own band, V.S.O.P. (a re-creation of the Davis quintet except with Freddie Hubbard in place of Miles), suggested that he retained an interest, however peripheral, in jazz.

That's the case with this album, Hancock with Carter and Williams.
Given all the talent on hand, it's surprising how dull this album is. Laswell was in a slump during the late 80s, with one production after another featuring lots of open space, electronic drums playing standard 4/4 patterns, minimal funk bass, and a small range of keyboard effects.
Despite the album's remarkable consistency and endless variety, it doesn't really take the listener into Gershwin's world, because the interpretations are so modern (the brilliant, space-filled interplay on "Here Come Da Honey Man").
