David Sylvian - Secrets Of The Beehive :: Le pietre miliari di Onda Rock (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.cs.umd.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)

It's not to be missed by anyone who hasn't abandoned the search for 'love songs' that don't induce vomiting in listeners with a three-digit I.Q. The reviewer who, some time ago, described Secrets of The Beehive as "a rich and vital work of art" probably summed it up as well as anyone.

David Sylvian’s “Secrets of the Beehive” was the most ideal sound track for such a day.
My friend Jonas Renkse had been trying to get me into “Secrets..” over a year ago and for whatever reason I never followed through.
The music is rich with orchestration but always remains extremely tranquil yet drenched in melancholy — to the point of outright depression at moments (in the same way Drake could bring this feeling in the songs mentioned).

 Secrets by Robert Palmer CD
The storming opening cut, the blues-based "Bad Case of Lovin' You (Doctor Doctor)," is a far cry from the exotic tempos and polished offerings that dominated Palmer's early recordings.
Harking back to the venerable love-as-illness metaphor, the track would be a runaway success, and from his joyful opening vocal salvo it sounds like Palmer knew it.
In addition to the chart success of "Bad Case of Lovin' You," SECRETS had the depth to make Palmer a familiar voice on FM rock radio.

 David Sylvian
n the 12 years separating his last two solo albums, 1987's "Secrets of the Beehive" and 1999's "Dead Bees on a Cake," David Sylvian went through an unexplained personal crisis, found true love, experienced a spiritual awakening and rediscovered himself and his muse.
He put his solo career to the side after "Secrets of the Beehive" and buried himself in a variety of arty works, among them two instrumental albums with Holger Czukay, a brief reunion with the other members of Japan under the name Rain Tree Crow and an album with Robert Fripp (1993's "The First Day").
There was a pretty awful period of crisis, you could call it, to do with my private life, with relationships, that just sent me in a downward spiral, and I found it very difficult to focus on writing at all.

Elegant and sophisticated are probably the two words most commonly used to describe David Sylvian’s timeless masterpiece, Secrets of the Beehive.
Since that time, there have been many hits and misses throughout Sylvian’s solo catalogue, but Secrets of the Beehive undoubtedly remains his strongest material yet.
Unfortunately, when the album is allowed to wander, I am left with the dissatisfying feeling that this could have been one of this year’s most compelling pieces of music.

‘Secrets of the Beehive’ is one of David Sylvian’s most acclaimed solo works.
It was here that he refined his creative relationship with Ryuichi Sakamoto, who contributed string arrangements and piano to the album, and the two came up with a sound quite magical in it’s ambience and warmth.
If you have only heard David Sylvian’s more recent work then this would be a fine place to start on his back catalogue.

Personally, I greatly prefer Gone To Earth, which is less structured, the accompanying musicians (accomplished jazzers) having more space into which to expand.
Although these may seem opposites, Sylvian mastered the ability to write carefully and concisely about the everyday while appearing other-worldly and ethereal.
This not being a mainstream artist may not be everyones cup of tea, but it is both an outstanding collection of songs and a good album to just hit 'Play' and lie down to listen to.

 The Secrets of His Beehive
Alluding (perhaps) to his recently discovered Buddhist nature, the happiness of marriage and children, and his first ever tour of the United States (though he moved to this country from England ten years ago), he writes: "All this has made the journey clearer and better defined."
These records showed as much discord as they did drive-by romanticism and a desire for the spiritual awakening he seems to have located -- an awakening that allowed his narrative deconstructionist nature to bend with his sun-dappled and ethereal music without losing the weight of experiment.
That audiences can witness his constant mothlike transference live should prove to be a like a beehive bursting with sweet, unpure honey, equal doses grace and graininess.

Gone to Earth, an ambitious double LP recorded with assistance from Robert Fripp and Bill Nelson, followed in 1986, while 1987 marked the release not only of the beautiful Secrets of the Beehive album but also the book collection {-Trophies: The Lyrics of David Sylvian}.
At the same time, he began composing the score for modern dancer Gaby Abis' {+Kin}, which premiered at London's Almeida Theater that September; another collaboration with Abis, {+Don't Trash My Altar, Don't Alter My Trash}, bowed in November 1988.

The moodily acoustic "When Poets Dreamed of Angels" is countered by the hymn-like "Let the Happiness In," while the rhythmic pulse of "The Boy With the Gun" is followed by the almost abstract "Maria." The result is an album varied in texture yet unified in mood.

In modern recorded music there has always been a section of sheer pop marketed to the masses.
In 1982, British tabloids ran headlines featuring David Sylvian as "the most beautiful man in all of Britain." A scant 5 years later, he would alienate the fans he had gained as the lead singer of the glam/early electronic band Japan.
He was to do so by creating a work that was only about music, only about lyrics with such depth, complexity, and texture, that it remains a complete 'must hear.' Secrets of the Beehive is an album unlike any before or since.

'Secrets of the Beehive' was Sylvian's second solo masterpiece (after 1984's 'Brilliant Trees')- here he temporarily put on hold the ambient/experimental directions of 'Alchemy' & much of 'Gone to Earth' & opted to produce an album of strong songwriting.
'Secrets of the Beehive' is probably the album that people have been hoping Scott Walker would make since 'Scott 4'.
