 Secunia Upgrades IE Flaw
Denmark-based security firm Secunia has upgraded a warning issued last year regarding a known vulnerability for computer users running Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0 from "highly" to "extremely" critical, according to an advisory published Friday.
Secunia also learned about a second HTML Help control flaw, a variant of the first control flaw that creates a security site/zone restriction error in the handling of the "Related Topics" command.
Secunia also posted a test application for Windows XP SP 2 and IE 6.0 users to determine whether their systems are vulnerable.

Security statistics show surprising finds   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
This year and last year Secunia tallied 36 advisories on security issues with the software, many of them allowing attackers to remotely take over the system - comparable to figures on operating systems such as Windows XP Professional and Red Hat Enterprise Server.
Secunia said the service could help companies keep an eye on the overall security of particular software - something that is often lost in the flood of advisories and the attendant hype.
Secunia agreed that straightforward comparisons are not possible, partly because some products receive more scrutiny than others.

InformationWeek > Security > Security Group Warns Of Newly Discovered IE Flaw > June 30, 2004
Secunia says the malicious content will appear as if it originated from a trusted site, which is an attack commonly known as spoofing.
Secunia says it has verified the flaw in "a fully patched Internet Explorer 6 running on Microsoft Windows XP" and that other versions of Internet Explorer could also be affected by this vulnerability.
Secunia's only advice is that Internet Explorer users not visit untrusted Web sites or select a different browser.

InformationWeek > Mac OS X Flaw > Secunia: Mac OS X Users Still At Risk > May 24, 2004
Security firm Secunia warned Apple Computer users this past weekend that they remain at risk to attack even if they apply a patch Apple published Friday to fill a security hole.
In an E-mail interview Monday, a Secunia spokesman said that the security firm hasn't been in contact with Apple to discuss the lingering security vulnerability.
According to Secunia's advisory, Apple's security update doesn't solve all the security problems related to the two flaws widely reported May 17.

TechWeb | Security | New IE 6.0 Bug Spotted, No Fix
According to an alert posted by Secunia, up-to-date and fully-patched versions of IE 6.0 in both Windows XP (up through Service Pack 1) and Windows 2000 are vulnerable to attack through the IFRAME HTML tag.
Malicious Web pages that include specially-crafted HTML can cause a buffer overflow on the target machine, then gain control of the system and introduce other code, such as a Trojan horse.
Secunia recommended that IE 6.0 users not running SP2 switch to another browser until a patch is released by Microsoft.
