Secure FTP, created as a student project at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), is a frequently downloaded new file transfer client that provides users a simple way to have a secure connection while transferring files via FTP (file transfer protocol), the most widely used method of transferring large files over the Internet.
Secure FTP gives you the option to encrypt just the username and password." The current version of Secure FTP encrypts the command channel, which contains the username and password, and version 2 will add an option to allow the data channel to be encrypted as well.
Secure FTP is available in English, Japanese, and Italian, with French and German translations planned in the near future.

With a secure FTP server, the information is not only received almost instantaneously, but it also saves you time and the money spent packaging, handling and shipping the information to your client.
It is possible to nest FTP account folders such that a group administrator can login and have full access to all other folders beneath his or her main account folder.
While securing the transmission of the username and password is certainly very critical, our encryption methods also secure the data channel during transfers to and from the server.

Amherst College IT: Secure FTP for Windows   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) has long been the standard method for transferring files to and from a Unix server.
The problem with FTP is that it is not secure.
To secure FTP transactions to an Amherst Unix server, you need to "tunnel" FTP through a secure connection to the server.

The Kermit FTP Client - Secure Scriptable FTP for Microsoft Windows, Unix, Linux, QNX, IBM OS/2,...
Secure FTP servers are available from the sources listed in the security document.
Because (a) FTP is inherently platform-neutral, and works everywhere, not just on Unix and Windows; (b) FTP handles cross-platform text-file transfer; (c) Kerberos and SSL/TLS are more secure than SSH since they provide for revocation of compromised identities (CLICK HERE for a thorough discussion).
FTP sessions are fully scriptable using Kermit's normal script programming language, which includes status indicators, user-defined and built-in variables, arrays, and functions; block structure, loops, decision-making, pattern matching, string operations, file i/o, integer and floating-point arithmetic, scoping, recursion, and all the rest, plus access to internal FTP protocol messages and codes.

FTP over SSH - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Since FTP, unusual for a TCP/IP protocol still in use, uses multiple TCP connections, it is particularly difficult to tunnel over SSH.
If the FTP client is configured to use passive mode and to connect to a SOCKS server interface that many SSH clients can present for tunnelling, it is possible to run all the FTP channels over the SSH connection.
FTP over SSH is sometimes referred to as secure FTP; this should not be confused with other methods of securing FTP, such as with SSL/TLS (FTPS).

secure ftp on linux - Dev Shed
FYI, when you said secure ftp, I first thought you wanted sftp (which is really a Secure FTP).
Standard ftp isn't as secure as you think and it has nothing to do with using ProFTPD, vsftpd, wuftpd or whatever, because some of the security issues are inherent to the protocol, not to the FTP daemon.
For one thing, your account information (login/password) are transmitted in plain text to the FTP server, so anyone listening in with a packet sniffer can easily see what your password is. sftp on the other hand doesn't suffer from this problem.
