Topic: Secure file transfer program

UW Security Site--Secure file transfer software
Transferring files to and from UW central computers requires the use of software that has security features to protect your password.
The requirement for password-protecting file transfer software is part of a UW-wide effort to improve the security of UW computing and networking by no longer allowing the use of programs that send passwords over the network in easily captured ("clear-text") formats.
File transfer software obtained from the Spring 2001 (and newer releases) version of the UW Internet Connectivity Kit already has the needed security features and should continue to work.

FTP -- File Transfer Protocol -- suffers from a vulnerability similar to telnet.
Essentially, FTP is used to transfer files from one computer (such as a personal workstation) to a remote host (such as UMBC's gl server cluster).
Copying a file, of course, places a duplicate of the original file onto the remote server, while moving the file actually transports the original file from the local computer to the remote computer (meaning it no longer exists on the local computer).
