GLOBALink - Distribution and determinants of sedentary lifestyles in the European Union   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Another objective was to study two alternative definitions of a sedentary lifestyle and analyse differences in the prevalence of a sedentary lifestyle according to the geographical distribution of participants and to some socio-demographic variables, such as gender, age, marital status, and the highest educational level attained.
The purpose of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of sedentary lifestyle in the EU, and to explore the socio-demographic conditions that determine this prevalence.
In summary, we provide estimates of the distribution of sedentary lifestyles in the EU and their association with several socio-demographic characteristics that should be taken into account for future intervention and the prevention efforts that are urgently needed.

Physical function in sedentary and exercising older veterans as compared to national norms   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Newly enrolled participants (sedentary group) were generally inactive or not regularly active prior to being referred to Gerofit by their healthcare provider.
No significant differences exist between the sedentary and exerciser groups in any of the physical variables, although the sedentary group mean weight difference of ±3.5 kg compared to the exercisers is clinically significant [20].
Based on these data, the average sedentary veteran in his early 70s is near the minimum threshold of cardiorespiratory endurance (18 to 20 mL/kg/min) that allows an individual to function without limitations or dependency for some activities of daily living [16,23,24].

Estimates of sedentary behavior shown here are based on responses to a series of questions asking how often and how long respondents engaged in leisure physical activities for at least 20 minutes that caused sweating or changes in their heart rate or breathing.
Sedentary behavior has been identified as a risk factor for a variety of chronic health conditions, including coronary heart disease, hypertension, colon cancer, and diabetes mellitus.
About 72% of adults who never attended high school were sedentary, declining steadily to 45% among high school graduates and about 24% among adults who had attained graduate level college degrees (figure 3 and table 1).

Therefore, even though "sedentary work" represents a significantly restricted range of work, this range in itself is not so prohibitively restricted as to negate work capability for substantial gainful activity in all individuals.
This means that the individual must be able to perform substantially all of the strength demands defining the sedentary level of exertion, as well as the physical and mental nonexertional demands that are also required for the performance of substantially all of the unskilled work considered at the sedentary level.
The unskilled sedentary occupational base may or may not be significantly eroded depending on the facts in the case record.

Sedentary lifestyle: a global public health problem
Sedentary lifestyle is a major underlying cause of death, disease, and disability.
Approximately 2 million deaths every year are attributable to physical inactivity; and preliminary findings from a WHO study on risk factors suggest that sedentary lifestyle is one of the ten leading causes of death and disability in the world.
The proportion of adults who are sedentary or nearly so ranges from 60 to 85%.

A key problem to solve, therefore, is that the bulk of these sedentary Americans do not know that they are, or more likely are not, getting enough protein in their diet.
This large group of sedentary people reflects the myth that protein-rich nutrition is important only for athletes and those who are physically active.
Many sedentary Americans who have some basic awareness of protein’s importance in diet believe, due largely to marketing campaigns, that fast food burgers are a “good source of protein”.

EXERCISE PROGRAMS CAN HELP SEDENTARY OLDER ADULTS
Older adults spend much of their time engaged in sedentary activities like talking on the telephone and reading, but programs to promote physical activity can help them get moving, according to new research.
However, most activities were sedentary in nature,” note the researchers, Rebecca E. Lee, Ph.D., of the University of Kansas School of Medicine and Abby C. King, Ph.D., of the Stanford University School of Medicine.
The women in the second part of the study who enrolled in the exercise-focused program were far more likely than those enrolled in the nutrition-focused program to expand their physical activity.

A sedentary lifestyle is detrimental to one's health, but starting and sticking with an endurance-training program plays a major role in reversing the damage done to the heart, even if that program is initiated later in life, he added.

Older Adults Still Sedentary After Exercise
Researchers say older adults are considered prime targets for physical activity interventions because they generally have more discretionary time, and lack of time is the most common barrier to regular exercise.
More than 95% of the men and women reported talking on the phone and reading as their most frequent sedentary leisure activities, and the next most commonly reported sedentary activities were visiting with friends, watching TV, and listening to the radio.
Researchers say participants may have thought their participation in the physical activity intervention was enough, and that it was not necessary to increase activity levels in other areas of their lives.

 Media Risks
However interested parents are in understanding risks associated with children's sedentary lifestyle, the medical information is available long after their children's media use patterns are well established.
This strategy targets elementary children (grades 3-6) because they are in the process of forming their sedentary lifestyle practices, are subject to peer influence, and because parental concern and involvement in media use or its alternatives is highest.
A take-home parental survey will examine the degree to which parents are aware of and concerned about sedentary lifestyle risks to their children and what they are capable of and willing to do about these risk factors.

BEING SEDENTARY, SUCH AS WATCHING A LOT OF TV, INCREASES THE RISK OF DIABETES
CHICAGO - A sedentary lifestyle, as indicated by time spent watching television, is associated with an increased risk for type 2 diabetes; and greater physical activity is associated with a reduced risk, according to an article in the June 25 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, a member of the JAMA family of journals.
Frank B. Hu, M.D., and colleagues from the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, analyzed data on 37,918 men (from the Health Professional's Follow-up Study) aged 40 to 75 years to determine whether prolonged TV watching increases the risk for type 2 diabetes.
Television watching represents a major sedentary behavior in the United States; on average, a male adult spends approximately 29 hours per week watching TV, and a female adult, 34 hours per week.

One can question the basic assumptions of the people doing the study described in "Sedentary off-hours link to Alzheimer's." One would hope that going to church is not less an intellectual endeavor than others, though it may be less physical than knitting or gardening.
Even TV can be intellectual if viewers are testing their ability to stump the experts on a game show.

Six out of ten people in the UK are classified as having a sedentary lifestyle which could put their health at risk, according to new research into the lifestyles of men and women in the European Union, published in the current edition of the International Journal of Epidemiology.
A lower prevalence of sedentary lifestyle was found in Northern countries (especially Scandinavian countries) as compared with Mediterranean countries (see table below).
The report shows that sedentary lifestyles are prevalent across the European Union and warns of the health consequences of this large-scale inactivity, especially as people with low levels of physical activity were also more likely to be smokers and to be obese.

They have formed a group called RID (Researchers against Inactivity related Disorders - www.ridinactivity.org) and are spreading the word about a group of hypokinetic diseases, or diseases that result from inactivity.
Being sedentary is defined as engaging in less than 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, equivalent to brisk walking, each day.
