GLOBALink - Distribution and determinants of sedentary lifestyles in the European Union   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Another objective was to study two alternative definitions of a sedentary lifestyle and analyse differences in the prevalence of a sedentary lifestyle according to the geographical distribution of participants and to some socio-demographic variables, such as gender, age, marital status, and the highest educational level attained.
The purpose of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of sedentary lifestyle in the EU, and to explore the socio-demographic conditions that determine this prevalence.
In summary, we provide estimates of the distribution of sedentary lifestyles in the EU and their association with several socio-demographic characteristics that should be taken into account for future intervention and the prevention efforts that are urgently needed.

Sedentary lifestyle as a recognized risk factor for health outcomes is a relatively new concept.
In order to meet the challenge of changing sedentary lifestyle in Utah, Studies III and IV examine the influences of ten factors on physical activity, including the effects of individual socio-demographic characteristics, health insurance status, and relationships with others in family and community.
In sum, to change the trend of sedentary lifestyle in Utah, public health initiatives must be multifaceted, family- and community-focused, targeted to specific groups, as well as grounded in the research of health education, social sciences and behavior change, and effective social-marketing.

Of these lifestyle risks, some of the most difficult to manage and control are those associated with children's increasingly sedentary lifestyles - especially the time they spend consuming commercial media.
This strategy targets elementary children (grades 3-6) because they are in the process of forming their sedentary lifestyle practices, are subject to peer influence, and because parental concern and involvement in media use or its alternatives is highest.

Sedentary Lifestyle May Be Created in the Womb
Some New Zealand researchers suggest that the well known association between obesity, metabolic syndrome, sedentary behavior, and overeating might be linked to how nourished a woman is during pregnancy.
Pups that were undernourished in the womb were significantly more sedentary after weaning and as they grew compared with those born from rats that ate a diet that had free access to food.
Researchers also found that the offspring born to the undernourished mother, when placed on a high-calorie diet, seemed to worsen their sedentary behavior, these pups also ate more.
