Following postgraduate studies in sedimentology in Calgary and in tectonics in Paris, Jean-Yves Chatellier worked around the world for Petroconsultants and Shell International before accepting a job as senior research geology advisor for Petroleos de Venezuela.
His first and main task was to address the problem of reservoir prediction in deep basin and develop methods to predict quartz cement distribution and diagenesis.

 Basin Analysis Group People
I was honored to receive the 1998 School of Science award for "Outstanding Assistant Professor for Excellence in Teaching and Research." At the graduate level, I teach courses on basin analysis, crustal tectonics, petroleum geology, and sedimentary petrology.
The centerpiece of this course is a 10 day Appalachian field trip starting in the distal deposits of the Pennsylvanian foreland basin of Kentucky, proceeding through the proximal foreland basin and thrust belt of Tennessee, and ending on the metamorphic thrust sheets of North Carolina.
At Purdue, I am working on a project combining stratigraphy and sedimentology to understand the early stages of arc-continent collision and the transition from an accretionary prism to foreland basin in the Hengchun Peninsula of southern Taiwan.

Sabkha and Desert Features - Introduction
Sabkha is an arabic name for a salt-flat that has come into general use in sedimentology following classic research in the United Arab Emirates of the Arabian Gulf in the 1960s and later.
The importance in terms of sedimentology of flash floods is that much of the desert sediment is reworked by water at distant intervals of time.
Thus aeolian deposits may be less conspicuous in the geological record than expected, or at least cut into by fluvial sediments.
