Seduction of the Innocent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Seduction of the Innocent was a book by Dr. Fredric Wertham, published in 1954, that warned that comic books were a bad form of popular literature and a serious cause of juvenile delinquency.
Seduction of the Innocent cited overt or covert depictions of violence, sex, drug use, and other adult fare within "crime comics"—a term Wertham used to describe not only the popular gangster/murder-oriented titles of the time, but superhero and horror comics as well.
Seduction of the Innocent is also the name of a social guidance film by Sid Davis that portrayed marijuana as leading to heroin addiction.

Review of Seduction of the Innocent
*Seduction of the Innocence* was clearly written as a persuasive book intended for the layman, and as such should be dealt with on these grounds first.
Unlike Wertham's analogies, mine is a fair one: Wertham was an M.D. and *Seduction of the Innocent* was essentially his collection of beliefs based upon his experiences.
I detail the flaws of *Seduction of the Innocent* because they unfortunately detract from the surprising validity of Wertham's central thesis, that anti-social material presented in the media can influence the behavior of the audience.

 Fredric Wertham
His 1954 book exposing the comic-book industry, Seduction of the Innocent, is still remembered in American comics fandom as a wildly exaggerated and overwrought polemic and has gone on to become a collector's item in its own right.
Seduction is in large part a dreary recital of one juvenile crime after another, juxtaposed with descriptions of horrible examples of the "crime comic books" that supposedly led to such behavior.
The unknowing reader is left with the impression that Wertham is simply a public figure known for his "writings or talks on such subjects as mass media, youth problems, or violence," and fanzine editors sent him their publications just to communicate pleasantly with the nice gentleman in response.

Seduction of the Innocent and the Attack on Comic Books
Even though there were a number of people in the media who were critical of comic books, Dr. Wertham's book Seduction of the Innocent, published in 1954, had the most devastating effects.
First, a deal to make Seduction of the Innocent the selection for the Book of the Month Club was somehow killed.
In Seduction of the Innocent, Dr. Wertham showed the gruesome covers and pictures of some books.

Regardless, neither Wertham's articles nor his book, Seduction of the Innocent, were hardly based on sound scientific principles.
Seduction of the Innocent, in particular, is filled with a priori assumptions, conclusions based on guilt by association, and interpreting material out of context.
Despite the fact that Seduction of the Innocent offered no real evidence for the harmful effects comic books supposedly had on children, the book severely damaged the industry.

Slowly, and at first reluctantly, I have come to the conclusion that this chronic stimulation, temptation and seduction by comic books, both their content and their alluring advertisements of knives and guns, are contributing factors to many children's maladjustment.
All comic books with their words and expletives in balloons are bad for reading, but not every comic book is bad for children's minds and emotions.
While Wertham may have eventually come to terms with the comic reader community, he is still largely villified.

Differing interpretations of Seduction of the Innocent aside, we clearly agree on two key points: Wertham was decidedly not a bogeyman or the "epitome of evil", and understanding him is important to understanding the challenges comics have faced in the past - and perhaps some of those we face now.
The Seduction of the Innocent I remember reading was a polemic thinly disguised as social science.
Wertham was a star in the witch-hunt against comics and Seduction Of The Innocent was the bible he and others pounded.

The comic industry's woes began when Dr. Fredric Wertham, a German-American psychiatrist, published Seduction of the Innocent - a book which warned that comic books were turning America's youth into juvenile delinquents.
Wertham's book attacked comics for their violence and strong sexual themes which, he argued, young readers were likely to imitate.

I have often found that such attitudes, however serious they may seem, may be merely a facade, the psychological structure of which can not be understood without a full knowledge of the mass seduction by comic books.
An important aid in understanding these attitudes and their relation to comic books is our finding that frequently the influence of comic books is not exerted directly, but comes through other children.

SEDUCTION OF THE INNOCENT Poll - Tartsville
While I don't wish to be arrogant and presume that everyone here knows of this book, I am working under the general assumption that most people on this board are familiar enough with its effects on the comic industry of the 1950s to recognize the title.
The problem with Seduction of the Innocent isn't that Wertham had some kind of sinister agenda; he was sincere, and his motives were the purest.

In 1948, Dr. Wertham published an article stating that the crime and violence depicted in comics were an important factor in leading kids on the criminal path.
But it was the publication of his book 'Seduction of the Innocent' that really made an impact on a society already troubled over an increasing number of comics like 'Terror', 'Weird Science' and 'Vault of Horror'.
In this book, he gave graphic examples of how these books depicted sex, crime, murder, sadism and drugs.

A Senate investigation in the mid-1950s resulted in the founding of the Comic Code Authority, and Gaines had to find another genre to generate money.
