Topic: Seedsnipe

In the News (Sun 15 Nov 09)

 Aves - Thinocoridae
The seedsnipes are a poorly know avian group from the Andes Mountains and Patagonia in South America.
Seedsnipes appear to be the only year-round, strictly vegetarian shorebirds, feeding on seeds, succulent leaves, flowers, and some berries.
Seedsnipes have short extremities, perhaps another adaptation for surviving in their cold habitats.

Northwards of its distribution zone is joined with the scarce for that zone Rufous-bellied seedsnipe (Attagis gayi gayi) being able to differentiates by its white abdomen to difference of the pale to dark cinnamon abdomen of the A.
It frequents cordilleran steppe environments, high and solitary plains with peat-bogs and grass mixed with zones without vegetation, seeking protection and shelter of the strong winds between the rocks or small shrubs.
In breeding time, they go in pairs; but in winter they are joined in flocks of 15 or more birds, to travel through all the day the hills in search of seeds and fruits.

Nine to eleven subspecies of seedsnipe are recognized based on plumage characters and morphology.
This species may be found sympatrically with its congener, least seedsnipe, but the two species segregate by micro-habitat, least seedsnipe preferring more arid and grassy areas.
Due to the cryptic plumage and habits of thinocorids, the bold tie of a male least seedsnipe, perched on a stone, may be the only way of detecting their presence in an arid landscape.

Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is found in the high Andes at up to 4000 m, although it can occur as low as 2000 m in the south of its range.
Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe, when on the ground, looks superficially like a partridge in structure and bill shape.
The nominate race which breeds in Chile and Patagonia has scalloped pale rufous underparts, and reddish brown upperparts, with much barring.

Lower case "s" in English name "Painted-Snipe" (Nycticryphes)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The compound word is a three syllable noun and causes no problems to pronunciation, thus does not fall in the exception to "Rule 1".
The current name used is further wholly inconsistent with the name "Seedsnipe" (used essentially without exception for the Thinocoridae).
Although not four syllables long, it could be argued that "Paintedsnipe" is more unwieldy than "Seedsnipe".
