Now, ten years later, delivered to Seeland Records in a brown paper wrapper with no identifying information, comes this historical audio archive of Negativland's apparently illegal acts involving some unwilling guys from Ireland (though it says here they're from 'England').
The sounds Ostertag uses are all from one recording of a young boy in El Salvador burying his father, who had been killed by El Salvador's US-backed army.
Recorded in 1989 when Ostertag had just returned to music after years working in the Salvadoran revolution, the first edition quickly sold out and has been out of print for 10 years.

Seeland Records is an independent record label created by Negativland in the 1980s to release their own recordings.
Seeland largely disappeared when Negativland signed with SST Records for a time during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
But after an acrimonious split with that label, Negativland revived Seeland and begain releasing new recordings, not just by themselves but also by other artists (the Evolution Control Committee and John Oswald to name two) who usually shared their philosophies regarding fair use.

 Negativmailorderland: Non-Negativland Releases
As we resurrected our own Seeland label in the wake of leaving SST Records, a bunch of unknown groups of noisemakers and musicians began to approach us about putting their CDs out on our label.
Our answer was to offer a Seeland catalog number and access to our distribution to those few bands that both a) we really liked, and b) could afford to finish and press their own CDs.
Seeland keeps just a few percent of sales to cover the cost of handling the money; the rest goes to the bands, and all rights to the music stay with the artist.

He was instrumental in helping shape the "feel" of Silent Records and wrote the liner notes to many of the Silent releases.
The first full-length album "Kamarupa" was released on the independent record label Noh Poetry in San Francisco in July, 1997 and made Backroads Music's Best of the Year charts.
It seemed that ambient was always in the air, and all paths led to an ambient state.

But that same recording, a CD titled Plunderphonic, made Oswald a household name, at least in some of North America's more esoteric households, and convinced the Grateful Dead, Elektra Records, and others to commission him to do exactly what had got him in trouble in the first place.
Taken as a whole, his music also raises important issues regarding what well-known recordings mean once they've been twisted out of their familiar shape, the nature of copyright in the postmodern age, and how copyright laws have restricted certain types of creativity.
And listening to the history of 20th-century music--the entire history of recorded music, effectively--turned on its head with such daring, such invention, such intellect, and such rampant wit is an experience no adventurous music listener should miss.

Music : Points   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
this was the second album negativland did, recorded in 1981 when the guys were all about 19 years old, however it sounds like it was made by guys who had been doing avant-garde sound collages for over thirty years.
Negativland were making some fantastic records back then, their first self titled record and the album proceeding this one, A Big-10 Place, are examples of Negativland at their creative peak.
POINTS was recorded before tape-master Don Joyce was a credited member of the group, so the textures are decidedly more brittle and spacious than what was to come.

Ink 19 :: In Perspective: Incredibly Strange Muzak
The records documented in this series could mostly be considered exotica (think Ultra Lounge), ranging from the electronic pioneering lounge music of Jean-Jacques Perrey to the laid-back easy listening sounds of the Three Suns or Martin Denny.
His vocals and the vocals of his main collaborator, Esther Nelson, are typical of elementary school dance instruction records, but the music going on in the background is another matter entirely.
Taking their cues from legendary sound collage artists Negativland (who deserve several books of their own, by the way) the Evolution Control Committee commanded the attention of the record buying public in recent years with the release of two seven-inch singles that have to be heard to be believed.

Clevelandian Mark Gunderson follows in the mold of Negativland, whose Seeland Records have nobly put out this collection of dance beats, lounge sounds and plundered vocals.
Seeland has valiantly re released cds of questionable legality, most notably putting out two discs of John Oswald's Plunderphonics in an oversize box with a thick book of notes and collage.
EEC might sound a little much like Negativland (who themselves made headlines when they were sued for sampling and altering the cover art from a U2 single), but Gunderson's humor and righteous sense of appropriation shine through on this subversively enjoyable disc.

The record was a synthesizer re-reading of U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, laced with samples of a foul-mouthed Casey Casem, host of American Top 40, angrily swearing at his engineers over an ill-timed death dedication to a dog named Snuggles.
The case is a perfect illustration of Island Records exploiting the situation, simply because they saw an opportunity to squeeze some money out of a group of individuals who had neither the money, nor the legal loopholes necessary to fight back.
The record could easily have been the demise of Negativland as the album is loaded with highly actionable samples, none of which were cleared or – obviously – paid for.

The consolidation of the mainstream record industry into just 5 gigantic companies has resulted in a parallel musical universe in which monetary gain is the sole purpose and justification for all cultural activity, as well as becoming the quality definer for any and all cultural production.
The culturally selfish assumption behind the major recording labels is that our arts are only to be consumed for a price and never shared freely unless they get their cut.

In 1989 Canadian audio artist John Oswald released his tour de force of sound appropriation "Plunderphonic", a cd that was never intended for sale, and found himself face to face with The Canadian Recording Industry Association and their lawyers.
Whether they were more upset with the "piracy" of their clients' music or the disc's cover art (which featured a picture of Michael Jackson as a naked white woman) can be argued -- according to Oswald the CRIA refused to allow it to be issued even with a cover change.

Plunderphonics 69/96 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The album complies most of Oswald's infamous Plunderphonics recordings, including the 1989 Plunderphonic self-released giveway album that ran afowl of the Canadian Recording Industry (CRIA), and the Elektrax promotional EP that had been originally commissioned by Elektra Records.
Oswald originally intended to release the album on his own Fony Records imprint, but was allegedly unable to get a pressing plant in Canada to cooperate with him.
The American experimental music group Negativland, who runs their own micro-label Seeland Records, offered to release the recording themselves, as they were able to deal with an American pressing plant that respected Negativland's and other Seeland artists' right to creative appropriation of found sounds.

Negativland : These Guys Are from England and Who Gives a Shit - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Negativland is still in many ways defined by the U2 debacle/smash success (depending on how you look at it), so it perhaps made perfect sense that ten years on the group would celebrate in perversely entertaining fashion with this release.
Officially speaking, the original material is still unable to be re-released, which perhaps explains why this 11-track album is supposedly available on Seelard Records rather Seeland, and why there's an amusing pseudo-legal brief in the liner notes asking the bootleggers to cease and desist.
Since no formal release of this material had ever appeared -- Negativconcertland was a bootleg, while only some parts were reused on Fair Use -- finally hearing it, cleanly recorded, is a treat and a half, as Kasem, U2, Island Records, Greg Ginn, SST and more are raked over the coals.

Instead of creating tunes with toy instruments, Mike Twink has utilised his massive collection of children's records to create a mashed-up musical world than none of us have encountered before.
Granted, the disjointed nature of this kind of recording process means that some of these tunes aren't as relaxing like those on previous Twink albums but that's not the point, they're not supposed to, this is an historic kids' recording adventure and a departure from Twink's normal style.
