Sefanaia Sukanaivalu was a Rhodesian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Born on Yathata Island, Fiji, Sukanaivalu was 26, and a Corporal in the Fijian Infantry Regiment during the Second World War, when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
Sukanaivalu is buried at Bitapaka War Graves Commission Cemetery, Rabaul, New Britain, Papua New Guinea.

THE remains of the only Pacific Islander to be awarded a Victoria Cross (VC) would be flown home to Fiji to be laid in a war memorial.
Sefanaia Sukanaivalu — one of only 1355 soldiers in the world to be awarded the medal for acts of valour in the face of the enemy — is buried at the Bitapaka War Memorial in East New Britain.
That’s when the remains of Corporal Sukanaivalu will be transferred and enshrined so that it’s part of the central part of the National War Memorial,” Mr Kotobalavu said.

It was the latest in a still-running legal process following the May 2000 coup in which now jailed traitor George Speight and members of the RFMF's Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit seized the government of Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry, holding them hostage for 56 days.
The RFMF was born during World War II and fought the Japanese in the Solomon Islands campaign -- winning a reputation for their military skills and bravery summed up in a posthumous Victoria Cross for Corporal Sefanaia Sukanaivalu.
Three years ago the RFMF ended a 25-year tour of duty with the UN in Lebanon, a mission that cost 32 soldiers their lives.

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces yesterday celebrated Infantry Day to commemorate the life of the late Corporal Sefanaia Sukanaivalu, the first recipient of the Victoria Cross during the Solomon campaign in World War II.
Cpl Sukanaivalu received Britain’s highest medal of valour after sacrificing his life to save his platoon from an ambush.
To mark the auspicious day, all infanteers from the Suva unit took part in the tactical route march up to Mt Nakobalevu where they spent the evening in tactical formations.

Corporal Sefanaia Sukanaivalu was posthumously given the highest award for exceptional bravery for trying to save the lives of his fellow soldiers in a battle against the Japanese on Bougainville during the second world war.
He has been buried at the Pitapaka Commonwealth War Cemetery near Rabaul next to thousands of other Commonwealth soldiers since the war.
