The Sega Channel was a joint effort between Sega and TCI Cable formed in 1994 to deliver Sega Genesis games to users via their existing cable TV line.
And of course, you had to contend with paying extra money to purchase the Sega Channel module (think a blocky 32X that features a 64k/s cable modem), not to mention the extra 15-or-so dollars a month that would be added to your cable bill.
Sega Channel did eventually hit the UK, but not until 1996, a scant two years away from its nationwide shutdown in the States.

Sega Mega Drive - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although the Sega Master System had proved a success in Brazil and Europe, it failed to ignite much interest in the North American or Japanese markets, which by the mid-to-late 1980s were both dominated by Nintendo with 95% and 92% market shares respectively.
The failures of the Sega CD and 32X, a lack of effective advertising, and disputes between Sega of America and Sega of Japan had taken their toll on the company.
By 1994, Sega's market share had dropped from 65% to 35%, and the official announcements of newer, more powerful consoles, such as the Saturn, Playstation, and N64 signaled that the 16-bit era was drawing to a close.

Sega's European division, Sega of Europe, is headquartered in the Chiswick area of London, England, United Kingdom.
Sega's revenues would hit $214 million by 1982 and in 1983, Sega would release their first video game console (the SG-1000), the first 3D arcade video game (Subroc 3D, which used a special periscope viewer to deliver individual images to each eye), and the first action-based laserdisc arcade game (Astron Belt).
Sega also rebranded themselves with a new mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog and implied that Sonic (given his attitude-focus and fluid gameplay) was cooler than Mario, Nintendo's mascot.

 The Sega Channel | Article
Sega went out on a limb and took a chance to offer their customers the FIRST easy and convenient way to play all of their games from the comfort of home.
I loved to play that game on Sega Channel, and when she told me that she did too, it brought us closer in way never seen before.
If you're going to compliment a service like Sega Channel, which deserves praise (and it would be cool if something similar to this was released again), then just do so and don't denigrate services like Live or any other online network (PS3's is free) without first getting your facts straight.
