Sega Multi-Mega/Sega CDX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Overpriced and underselling due to lack of high quality Sega CD games, and the anticipation of the Genesis' successor, the Sega Saturn, it was never well-supported by Sega, and died a quiet death.
European advertisements for the Sega Mega Drive 32X however, where it was often shown attached to a Sega Multi-Mega, suggest otherwise; upon testing, the 32X works perfectly with the Multi-Mega/CDX.
Reports from users that dared to attach the 32X to their expensive (and somewhat rare) CDX say that while the add-on may work, it does cause some issues of physical instability and stress, having the much larger 32X add-on sit atop the smaller CDX unit.

Ignorant of the idea that console systems' primary strength is in standardization, Sega had created three different platforms (the main console and the CD and 32X add-ons) all under the same banner, stealing valuable shelf space from itself and confusing both vendors and consumers in the process.

When the Mega Drive was released on October 29th 1988 (for 21000 Yen) in Japan, it too didn't make any large initial impact, in fact, it made a smaller impact on the video game market than the PC Engine, despite being superior to both Nintendo's dominant Famicom and the PC Engine.
Sega soon announced their initial US release date of 9th January 1989 and emphasized that the Genesis was the first true 16-bit system (PC Engine (or Turbo GrafX 16 as it was called in the US) wasn't).
