In addition, Sega's Power Base Converter used to play Sega Master System games was also incompatible with the device, although the peripheral had long been retired from the company's lineup.
Sega wanted to surprise consumers and get a leg up on the PlayStation, but what they did was send mixed signals to loyal, trusting Genesis owners.
After all, the Nomad was released at the tail end of the last great year for the Genesis.

The arrival of the Sega CD was announced in the United States in September 1991, an entire year in advance of its actual release date.
In 1994, Sega was in a transitional period, the company had just passed Nintendo as the top platform manufacturer with the 16-bit Genesis and Sega was looking ahead to the next generation of video gaming when they began to explore 32-bit technology.
Sega of America decided to rename the console the Genesis Super 32-X. The company knew that the Saturn would be released in the US in one year and didn’t want to abandon the millions of Genesis owners whose 16-bit cartridges would soon be obsolete.

Sega on the other hand, which had planned far to quickly, was nearly done with the development of the Saturn.
Only a select stubborn few stayed with Sega and Nintendo and most of them saw the error of their ways when they found out the Saturn and N64 were money pits as their fellow developers released games for the PSX and made money hand over fist even if the games they produced were awful.
Now Sega was not only up aginst a system that had better hardware and vastly more 3rd party support but it was cheaper than their system to boot.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Sega Nomad at Epinions.com
The Nomad was able to play almost every available Genesis cartridge with ease and players could even hook it up to a TV set and play it on the big screen, just like the Genesis itself.
Sega was also suffering from negativity from gamers who were upset over lack of support for their 32X Genesis add-on.
If the Nomad system had come out a bit sooner, this review might have had a happier ending; however, the Sega Nomad is widely perceived as another Sega failure by many industry pundits, due mainly to its poor sales performance.

Retro Thing: SEGA Nomad: A handheld Genesis
Introduced in late 1995, the SEGA Nomad was a neat piece of work.
Sales of the Nomad suffered because it was released near the end of the Genesis console's lifespan, and wasn't compatible with Genesis accessories such as the 32X (32-bit console add-on) and SEGA CD.
The Nomad is wickedly cool for all the reasons you cite, and of course problematic for all of the reasons that you cite.

Sega also had plans to release an all-in-one console (Genesis/Sega CD/32X -- code named Sega Neptune), but that never came to market as the 32X was not popular enough, and the release of the Saturn essentially killed the 32X as a viable 32-bit console.

Sega, however, learned from their previous mistakes, and wasn't about to let it happen again.
Although the first batch of titles were developed by Sega themselves, they wasted no time in grabbing third-party developers, something they didn't have the opportunity to do with the SMS because of Nintendo's licensing laws.
Once those laws were lifted, Sega was able to have companies like Electronic Arts and Treasure come in and contribute, as well as Sega with their own original masterpieces and arcade conversions.

Because the Nomad can be hooked into your TV, you can get around the "unreadable text" problems if you're near a TV and you have the appropriate cables.
Sure, the Nomad is a tad pricey and I think the price could drop about $40 or so, but consider what you are really getting: A Genesis with no "expansion" abilities, ie: you can't add the CD-ROM.
Since certain add-ons draw power from the Genesis/Nomad (ie team player which Sega recommends you use on the Nomad only with the adapter and not batteries) some of the stuff that worked with the adapter may not work with batteries.
