Sega Mega Drive - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although the Sega Master System had proved a success in Brazil and Europe, it failed to ignite much interest in the North American or Japanese markets, which by the mid-to-late 1980s were both dominated by Nintendo with 95% and 92% market shares respectively.
The failures of the Sega CD and 32X, a lack of effective advertising, and disputes between Sega of America and Sega of Japan had taken their toll on the company.
By 1994, Sega's market share had dropped from 65% to 35%, and the official announcements of newer, more powerful consoles, such as the Saturn, Playstation, and N64 signaled that the 16-bit era was drawing to a close.

The 32X was released in mid-November 1994 in North America for $150, Japan in December 1994, and Europe in January 1995 for £150.
The Sega 32X can only be used in conjunction with a Mega Drive/Genesis system; it is plugged in where the cartridge bay is. Besides playing its own cartridges, it also acted as a pass through for Genesis games so it would be a permanent attachment.
Ignorant of the idea that console systems' primary strength is in standardization, Sega had created three different platforms (the main console and the CD and 32X add-ons) all under the same banner, stealing valuable shelf space from itself and confusing both vendors and consumers in the process.

Unfortunately Sega has fallen on hard times recently and is moving out of hardware manufacturing, at least in the home console market; the arcade SEGA Naomi units are still being produced.
Sega was attempting to "lock out" game companies from making Genesis games unless they paid Sega a fee (ostensibly to maintain a consistent level of quality of games for their system.) Their strategy was to make the hardware reject any catridge that did not include a sega trademark.

Sega of America was all for the machine, of course, but most of the insiders at Sega of Japan was still betting on their baby, the CD-ROM based Project Saturn.
Sega's move to make Star Wars Arcade a launch title proved to be a wise one, because the ingrained acceptance of the Star Wars franchise coupled with the overall excellence of the game made it one of Sega's best-selling titles of the season.
Sega of Japan remained firm in its conviction that CD-ROM games would be the wave of the future, and the record shows that they fought Sega of America almost every step of the way in developing, releasing, supporting, and promoting the 32X.

Also, due to bugs left in the game (Sega's rush job on the port, remember), the game has an annoying tendency to lock up and there is at least one room that is completely inaccessible.
