The 32X was released in mid-November 1994 in North America for $150, Japan in December 1994, and Europe in January 1995 for £150.
The Sega 32X can only be used in conjunction with a Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis system; it is plugged in where the cartridge bay is. Besides playing its own cartridges, it also acted as a passthrough for Genesis games so it would be a permanent attachment.
Sega of America did not learn of this until Project Mars was already in progress.

Sega was originally founded in 1940 as Service Games in Honolulu, Hawaii, by Martin Bromely, Irving Bromberg, and James Humpert to provide coin-operated amusements for American servicemen on military bases.
Sega of Japan was purchased for $38 million by a group of investors led by Rosen and Hayao Nakayama, a Japanese businesman who owned a distribution company that had been acquired by Rosen in 1979.
Sega was attempting to "lock out" game companies from making Genesis games unless they paid Sega a fee (ostensibly to maintain a consistent level of quality of games for their system.) Their strategy was to make the hardware reject any catridge that did not include a sega trademark.

Unfortunately, this "surprise" was Sega of America's first mistake, of MANY to come in those early months in the U.S. Saturn's life.
Sega of America's marketing of the Saturn during 1995 was nothing short of laughable.
Sega of America's ad wizards seem to be regaining their 1995 era impotency and Nintendo appears more than willing to pull an "Ultra Combo" on potential Saturn game sales.

My online life started with this Sega Saturn Page that was originally hosted on a personal AOL web server account before I eventually registered the sega-saturn.com domain name and started putting a little money into my little site dedicated to my favorite console and gaming company.
But, once ol' Sega of America decided to sue me because of the domain, my career path began to move away from Sega as I made the big move from being an east coast boy to a Californian, as I took a job with Working Designs.
Ironically enough, WD was in a similar situation as myself in that the company was big on Sega in the past but their relationship had turned sour.
