PlanetDreamcast: Features - Dreamcast: What Went Wrong?
SegaNet, the Dreamcast's online gaming network and ISP (Internet Service Provider), was a very reliable service to play online games.
SegaNet was streamlined specifically for online play through the Dreamcast modem, and indeed it was very much so.
SegaNet, as an online gaming network, (when it wasn't being cancelled) was fantastic, but as an ISP it was terrible.

 A first look at SegaNet
In a world in which consumers are constantly migrating to broadband and the new hunt is for mobility, Sega has turned to a set-top video game with a 56K modem — the proven technologies of the last millennia.
The end result may not replace T1 as the connection of choice, but SegaNet seems nimble enough for specialized tasks and the first game offered on the service is surprisingly glitch-free.
The worst problems seem to be some jerkiness in the animation if you have a poor connection and whiney opponents who disconnect if you score on the opening kick-off.

But SegaNet has taken up a new strategy that e-businesses may find appealing: It is acting as both an Internet service provider and a dedicated extranet.
SegaNet's customers dial in to Genuity's local POPs using the 56K modem that comes standard in Sega's Dreamcast console.
The same techniques could be used to set up dedicated extranets for the scientific, medical, or other communities needing a widely accessible, low-latency, dial-up network for bandwidth intensive applications.

Using any ISP other than SegaNet results in horribly choppy, unplayable nonsense.
SegaNet doesn't give you much info about your opponent (again, most of my gripes with SegaNet itself don't truly belong in this review), so occasionally you get one guy with a keyboard and one without.
Likewise, you can't be sure if your opponent has SegaNet or not, and occasionally you get one guy on SegaNet and another using a different ISP.
