  Bob Seger vs Bruce Springsteen
Seger continued to suffer from lapses of taste and inspiration, of course--remember that he never transcended his journeyman status--and produced some albums where he was witlessly trying to rewrite "Night Moves" over and over, proving nothing other than extended bouts of introspection didn't serve Seger well at all as a songwriter.
Seger has often equaled the genius of rock and roll masters Chuck Berry and John Fogarty in writing what actually constitutes the life pulse of rock; short songs, spiked and fine tuned rage in the lyrics, and creditable, riveting beats to make the two or three minutes memorable, cathartic, and infinitely re-playable.
Seger's strength as a lyricist is that he's not introspective and that what he has to say isn't hindered with club-fingerd attempts at metaphor;unfortunately, Seger attempts poetry time and again, with laughable results, but his ability to recover these gaffes places him over Springsteen, who has not reined in his grating habits of poet-speak.

Ellis, in fact, is the more conservative prose writer of the two.
Ellis isn't able to write in any other way, and I suspect that he's fine with that limit, although he does wish to expand the few notes he can play into major orchestrations.
Ellis has very few pieces of music he knows how to play, which leaves him with some depressing choices when he strives to create yet again: play them louder, longer, faster, and after that, play them slower, softer, briefer.

Seger Ellis - Biography - AOL Music
He began tinkling on the keyboard as a boy and was first engaged professionally as a radio performer in Texas in the mid '20s.
Highlights of this period in which Ellis was in great demand include guest shots with the Paul Whiteman orchestra and the aforementioned film appearance, the 1934 One Rainy Afternoon.
Beginning in 1936, Seger spent nearly a year creating music with a group he called the Brass Choir, then assembled something of a more normal instrumental big-band line-up for another group under his leadership.

 Seger Ellis b
A popular radio and recording entertainer of the early '30s as a pianist/vocalist, Ellis later made a laudable but doomed attempt to ring a few changes on the regimented sound of many swing era big bands.
The band's vocals were handled by himself and his wife, Irene Taylor, a much-underrated singer.
Interesting though this approach was, it wasn't what the public wanted and the band folded in 1937, after which Ellis worked mostly with small groups and rarely strayed far from his home state.

Seger Ellis - Jazz in a Sentimental Mood | internet radio on icebergradio.com
Although the audience for crooners was quite large in the late '20s and early '30s, it apparently didn't have much room for Seger Ellis.
Despite recording dozens of excellent ballads, often accompanied by his piano as well as musicians, including Louis Armstrong, Eddie Lang, and Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Ellis wasn't very popular and, as a performer, faded quickly (he later gained more fame as a composer).
Seger Ellis' was the highest of male altos, a voice that crooned sweetly and warmly on "Under a Texas Moon," a quiet hymn to his birthplace, or "Sweet Sue, Just You," in a version that Ellis makes good use of space as well as his sly piano accompaniment.
