Segregated cycle facilities may consist of a separate road, track, path or lane that is designated for use by cyclists and from which motorised traffic is generally excluded.
The use of segregated cycle facilities is a central dogma of many organisations associated with the environmental movement.

Segregation in this manner can be used safely for peak combined flows of up to 180 cyclists and pedestrians per hour per metre width, provided that flows are balanced and the facility has a minimum verge width of 0.5m separating it from an adjoining carriageway or is separated from it by railings.
Cycle tracks should be demarcated by bollards, street furniture or by differentiation of surface colour, texture or height.
As it is only rarely that a cycle track would be provided exclusively for cyclists then widths should be in accordance with those recommended for the conversion of existing footways/footpaths to unsegregated or segregated facilities.

While primary cycle networks may be based on one type of facility, most cycle networks contain a mixture of different facility types.
For example, a cycle path may be appropriate where it provides a short link for primary school aged children near shops or a school, even though it is beside an arterial road with cycle lanes.
For example, cycle routes in regional or district networks may be classified as regional, inter-urban or tourist, while cycle routes in a large urban area may be classified as principal, collector or local.

I suggest that opponents of segregated facilities must address this point &endash; that there is a clear and evident relationship between cycling levels and the provision of segregated facilities as part of a wider provision of cycle facilities.
The critical point is that the motivation behind people wanting such facilities is the same as here as it is in the Netherlands &endash; it is pressure from cyclists that leads to continued provision of high-quality and segregated facilities in such countries.
For travel by cycle, the equivalent ratios death and serious injury in relation to that by car and bus travel are 27 times and 72 times higher, again excluding the effects of the considerable under-reporting of cyclists' casualties.
