The Segway Human Transporter (HT) is the result of years of research and development led by Kamen with the goal of building something that would make a unique and lasting contribution to society.
The Segway HT has redundant systems and sophisticated alerts built into its design, and many thousands of hours of use have demonstrated that the Segway HT is safe when used appropriately.
The Segway HT is designed to be operated by a wide range of people after receiving orientation—no special skills are required.

 Howstuffworks "How Segways Work"
Segway is offering a free software upgrade that will fix the problem, which is available at Segway dealerships and service centers [ref].
The Segway does pretty much the same thing, except it has wheels instead of legs, a motor instead of muscles, a collection of microprocessors instead of a brain and a set of sophisticated tilt sensors instead of an inner-ear balancing system.
The Segway promised to be a catalyst for a transportation revolution.

Segway develops a human transporter just for the golf course
Segway officials showed off the GT here at the PGA Fall Expo in the Las Vegas Convention Center, and after some follow beta testing, said they expect to have the product on the market by the end of the year.
The Segway uses technology called "dynamic stabilization" that enables it to work effortlessly with the body's movements; gyroscopes and tilt sensors in the unit monitor a rider's center of gravity at approximately 100 times per second, responding to changes in the body position.
Segway HT America, the Houston-based distributor of Segway LLC, said the GT allows a foursome to play faster by transporting each golfer individually to his or her ball, and along cart paths, inclines and fairways.

Thoughts about the Segway HT: Why it's not just a scooter
Some people try to evaluate the Segway with respect to living designs that were optimized for the car (not the rich diversity of a place like Greenwich Village), for example Mike Langberg's detailed first person account of using one in the Mercury News ("Segway scooter handles well but can't conquer sprawl").
The Segway is perfect for some of those, but more importantly, it shows that the automobile (being covered, and taking up lots of space for a single driver) is not the only personal mode of transportation that works in cities.
The Segway web site shows pictures of it holding grocery bags, Dean is often shown on TV with a big briefcase on the fender, and their web site says it is designed to pull 300 pounds and I've seen pictures of carts behind one.

 Segway laws
The Segway, with it's odd side-by-side wheel configuration and computerized auto-balancing, has a "gee whiz" factor, but it travels at speeds similar to those of a bicycle and poses similar risks -- except that Segway is heavier, can not turn as sharply when traveling at speed, and can not negotiate sideslopes as a bicycle can.
The Segway laws of New Hampshire, the Segway's home state, provide a fine example of what can occur when corporate lobbyists set about to rewrite the traffic law to suit their own purposes.
The Segway's speed and operating characteristics define it as a vehicle under section 259:122, except that it is specially defined as not being one.

Segway PT - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Segway was notable for the hype and secrecy surrounding its 2001 unveiling; Kamen only revealed that he had designed an object that would "revolutionize" modern life in some way, and the tremendous build-up to the release and subsequent lack of overwhelming public interest became a source for frequent satire.
The Segway was publicly mocked by Maddox on his website, claiming a third wheel with a shock absorber would render most of the technology keeping the Segway vertical moot.
The name "Segway" is a homophone of "segue" (a smooth transition); PT is an initialism for personal transporter while the old acronym HT was an initialism for human transporter.

 The Smoking Gun: Archive
The hot Segway was stolen about two months ago on Manhattan's Upper East Side, a theft reported to cops by the scooter's owner.
In a TSG interview, Wang, who is known as Eddie, said that he bought the Segway for $75 from a man who was pushing, not riding, the scooter on an East Harlem sidewalk.
Wang's bust was actually videotaped by a moderator of segwaychat.com, a news and discussion forum whose members aided detectives in the Segway sting.

The Segway GT takes much less space to store, has fewer moving parts with lower maintenance requirements, has low operational costs and is less expensive to recharge than a traditional battery operated golf cart.
And because the Segway GT can go places traditional carts cannot, traffic is distributed over a larger area as every rider goes straight to their own ball.
The Segway GT is fully sealed and can be used in the rain, but should be stored undercover from rain when not in use.

 Building a Balancing Scooter
Self-balancing scooters, like the Segway™ are often thought to be technological miracles, but it is not actually very hard to build one.
Although the Segway has several exotic components, mine is built from common low-tech parts like wheelchair motors and RC car batteries.
It may need a higher-performance gyroscope, but I think the main difference is that the Segway's wheels have a large moment of inertia which allows it to apply a reaction torque to the chassis.
