Seibal was first occupied around 800 BC, and throughout its history, has warred continually with its neighbors.
Yich'ak Balam, the king of Seibal, was captured-- and probably sacrificed -- in 735 AD by the Maya city of Dos Pilas, leading to about sixty years of foreign rule.
Perhaps as a result, Seibal lasted longer than most other cities in the Petén, and was permanently abandoned only around 930 AD.

Research into the Aztec/Mixtec government procedures indicate that one method the Northern tribes took over neighboring areas, was through bribery and/or infiltration of the area.
There is no dating of this procedure except on Seibal Stela 13, and the main evidence is the written record of Hernan de Cortés.

In Gordon R. Willey (ed.), Excavations at Seibal, Department of Peten, Guatemala.
"The sculptural corpus of the ruins of Seibal is unusual, even unique, in a number of respects.
Although the monuments located thus far in the exploration of the site belong to a relatively brief interval of Maya history, the number of monuments is surprisingly large, and additional systematic search of the ruins will almost surely product additional caving of significance" (Graham 1990:1).
