Virginia Wine Guide: Explore Virginia Wines
Late frosts are one of the many hazards of farming wine grapes in the Continental climate of Virginia, but Mt. Juliet is set on gentle hills surrounded by mountains, so those bud-killers-which can and have occurred as late as May in some years--tend to roll away from Jose's vines.
Mildew-another hazard in Virginia, especially when the growing season is rainy-is nicely addressed by fairly constant breezes, which dry off the grapes, and Jose's practice of spraying twice a week with a fungicide.
Chris Hill, who has been growing grapes in Virginia since 1981 and is Jose's leading viticulturist, noted that Mt. Juliet's practice is to drop any fruit that has not turned color by the third and fourth weeks in August.

Although one of the most successfully grown grape varieties in the Eastern US, Ontario, and the UK today, Seyval Blanc is a grape that commands little respect, even among wine cognoscenti.
Still, the grape is gaining a growing following especially in colder, shorter growing season areas because it buds early, grows vigorously, ripens early, yields large clusters of medium-sized green berries, and is fairly resistant to low temperatures and to disease.
And, its vigorous nature requires growers to remove canopy (to focus the plant on producing fruit rather than leaves and to allow the sun to reach and ripen the fruit) and to remove fruit in the vineyard (to help concentrate flavor in the remaining fruit).
