Travel in Tokyo and Yokohama (in a Nutshell)
Trains in Tokyo: there are many train lines running through and around the city and while transfers are relatively easy between lines, you sometimes need to buy two separate tickets because the lines are owned by different companies.
The easiest way to start (in my opinion) is to stick to the JR Yamanote line (which runs in a loop around the city and has stops at most major areas), and when you are feeling braver venture out to the subway lines, for which you will need to buy separate subway line tickets.
That may explain the long line for the elevators--though it seemed as though most of the crowd was foreign visitors.
