What is a seismologist?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Seismologists are Earth scientists, specialized in geophysics, who study the genesis and the propagation of seismic waves in geological materials.
In the case of earthquakes, seismologists evaluate the potential dangers and seek to minimize their impact through the improvement of construction standards.
Seismologists work in multidisciplinary ms composed of Earth scientists, technicians and professionals from the fields of computers, physics, electronics, telecommunications and civil engineering.

Seismology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One of the first attempts at the scientific study of earthquakes followed the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
Most seismologists do not believe that a system to provide timely warnings for individual earthquakes has yet been developed, and some believe that such a system would be effectively impossible.
Various attempts have been made by seismologists and others to create effective systems for precise earthquake predictions, including the VAN method.

Tasmanian quake 'the trigger' - Asia tsunami - www.theage.com.au
At least 12,600 people are believed to have been killed as a result of yesterday's earthquake and tsunami waves which swamped the coasts of Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia and the Maldives, and measured 9.0 on the Richter scale.
While it caused no damage and was barely felt by anyone in Australia, Geoscience Australia duty seismologist Dr Cvetan Sinadinovski (Cvetan Sinadinovski) said the Tasmanian quake set the scene for a much larger tectonic disturbance.
Seismologists expected further activity as a result of Thursday's quake, Dr Sinadinovski said.

An undersea earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami across southern Asia was set in motion by another quake off the coast of Tasmania last week, a seismologist said.
At least 12,600 people are believed to have been killed as a result of Sunday's earthquake and tsunami waves which swamped the coasts of Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia and the Maldives, and measured 9.0 on the Richter scale.
The earthquake was caused by one of the plates which makes up the world's surface moving a matter of metres, explained Dr Roger Musson, a seismologist with the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh.

 Beno Gutenberg, June 4, 1889—January 25, 1960 | By Leon Knopoff | Biographical Memoirs
BENO GUTENBERG WAS THE foremost observational seismologist of the twentieth century.
So the time was ripe in the first decade of the twentieth century for a bright young investigator to attack the problems of the seismic wave velocity in the Earth's interior through the application of readings of high quality instrumental data.
A meeting of leading seismologists was convened in October 1929 to assess the program, and Gutenberg, Jeffreys, Byerly, and Macelwane attended as external visitors.

 FAQ
The short answer is that while the moon does deform the earth slightly in a continuous 12 hour cycle called the solid earth tides, it doesn't seem to have an effect on the time of occurrence of large earthquakes.
Seismographs have operated on the moon (recording 600-300 moonquakes per year), and believe it or not, they have also already operated on Mars.Only one marsquake was recorded and it isn't known how frequently they occur.
As far as seismologists understand, all but the very deepest earthquakes (ones that happen at depths of greater than 600 km) occur on faults.

sacbee Local News: Hayward Fault not such a threat after all? Seismologist uses new techniques to measure slippage
A number of other faults may trigger a major earthquake, but the results of cutting-edge techniques now suggest the northern Hayward Fault isn't likely to be the culprit.
By dating cracks in the trenches, geologists were able to determine that the northern Hayward Fault has violently slipped in a major earthquake several times in the past 2,000 years.
Seismologists have not ruled out the possibility that the northern Hayward Fault will slip, but they are excited about the new techniques.

The Electronic Seismologist is particularly impressed with the use of standard TCP/IP protocols for both Internet and dial-up access and the UNIX operating system for the station processors.

Location, Depth Lethal Mix in Asian Earthquake
The earthquake that struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra occurred in a location that geologists know is susceptible to powerful earthquakes, according to a January 5 press release from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.
The quake occurred along a "subduction zone," in which the Indian tectonic plate is being subducted, or pulled beneath, the Burma tectonic platelet, said Lehigh seismologist Anne Meltzer, who has supervised two major international seismology research projects in the Himalayas.
The location of the recent earthquake that triggered a deadly tsunami in the Indian Ocean came as no surprise to geologists, says Anne Meltzer, a world-renowned seismologist at Lehigh University.

Making Wavelets in Finance by Mark Jensen
However, unlike the seismologist there is a limit to how often financial data can be sampled.
Whereas the seismologist's data can be evenly recorded every so many seconds apart, ultra-high frequency financial data is irregularly spaced.
One could choose to aggregate the financial data to fixed intervals of time, justifying this action by the large number of recording errors and the transient reactions to news that occurs during intense trading periods.

Cua, Georgia B. (2004-12-02) Creating the Virtual Seismologist: developments in ground motion characterization and seismic early warning.
The Virtual Seismologist method for earthquake early warning uses a Bayesian approach to find the most probable magnitude and location estimates given the incoming ground motions envelopes from a rupturing earthquake.
Ground motion ratios and ground motion envelope attenuation relationships are used to estimate magnitude and epicentral location as early as 3 seconds after the initial P wave detection.

Instead, the computers are on duty 24 hours a day, and one seismologist is designated each week to be the "duty seismologist." The duty seismologist carries two pagers, a laptop computer, and a cellular telephone at all times and will respond to all inquiries within a few minutes.
While the seismologist verifies an earthquake, the computer's automatic estimates, which are correct more than 90% of the time, are available to the press and the public via the Internet and CUBE, which is an earthquake information paging system.

Both were places for obtaining nourishment (for the belly or soul), news, and information, and were centers for social interaction.

Seismology is a specialism of geophysics - it is the study of the structure of the subsurface of the earth/earthquakes.
In particular, seismologists use seismic waves to display transects across areas of up to hundreds of kilometres, below land or sea.
The main responsibility is controlling the data quality by monitoring displays and performing some initial interpretation.
