Scanlations are considered illegal by both American and Japanese companies due to the fact that they are reproductions of the original, distributed for free rather than bought in the store.
Like the anime that they voice, seiyuu have forged as prominent a name for themselves as their counterparts in the live action part of the film and TV industry.
Many of these actors and actresses are also equally talented at singing as well as voice acting, and several have even made albums as part of pop groups.

Since the training schools have affiliations with seiyuu production companies, applicants hope to get picked up by the seiyuu production companies, but because of this, competition within the training schools is fierce.
Although the number of TV anime being broadcast is on the increase (and therefore more opportunities to land a role), even if a newcomer is able to make a debut as a seiyuu, there are few newbies who can find continual work, so it's not easy to earn a living working just as a seiyuu.

All are excellent singers with the exception of Mitsuishi Kotono (she lacks proper training and has been stuck with less-than-stellar vocals to sing), and of course their seiyuu abilities are topnotch.
My favorite Seiyuu would have to be Midorikawa Hikaru, who was the voice for Heero Yuy, Mikagami Tokiya, and Zelgadis (just to name a few of the dozens he's done), simply because his voice almost always perfectly fits the personnality of the charecter he's playing.
