There are hiati and transitional bads at both the lower boundary to the Maastrichtian and the upper boundary to the Selandian.
The strata and lower boundary to the Maastrichtian is demonstrated by Stevns Klint (GS 2-1).
The strata and upper boundary to the Selandian is exemplified by (Klintholm, GS 2-2).

Natuurinformatie - Leaf imprints in the marls of Gelinden(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Heers formation; the marls of Gelinden are attributed to the Selandian, (± 58 million years ago, Lower Paleocene) on the basis of the assemblages of calcareous nannofossils (Steurbaut, 1998); otherwise attributed to lower Landenian (=Thanetian) L1a (Moorkens, 1973).
The chalky marls of Gelinden were deposited in still water in the bay of an estuary carried by salt sea water mixing with the flow of fresh water from a river.
The comparison of foliage remains with the present-day vegetation allows a sufficiently precise reconstruction of the flora at Heers and of the countryside at the Selandianepoch.
Towards the end of the Danian the limestone was exposed and eroded, whereafter renewed transgression from West gradually reintroduced marine conditions.
Sandwiched in between Danian limestone and Selandian marl is also a thin glauconitic marl, which is a correlative of the Lellinge Greensand (NGI ???).
These changes and succession are effects associated to the creation of a basaltic barrier in between Greenland and Norway/Brittain separating Atlantic and Arctic seas, and causing a change from relative warm water to relative cold.
The contrast in preservation quality of these Danian - Selandian dinoflagellates in the lower part of the well compared to those at the level of first returns indicate that the lowermost occurrences are in situ, since caved specimens would show pristine preservation.
Mixing of Late Cretaceous bioevents and absence of certain regional Late Cretaceous bioevents is further indication that this well penetrates approximately 1400 metres of a Danian - Selandian mass transport deposit sourced from Late and Early Cretaceous sediments.
Four intervals in the well had higher gas readings ("gas shows") than the general background of 0.7- 1 %: 2340 m to 2360 m (maximum 6 %), 3014 m to 3020 m (maximum 6 %), 3260 m to 3280 m (maximum 8 %), and 3360 m to 3450 m (maximum 2.5 %).
Thus the Selandian is now what used to be the lower part of the Thanetian.
The Aquia starts in upper NP 5, which is late Selandian, and runs through most (but not all) of the Thanetian.
Because most authors have continued to employ Thanetian for the period 61.0 to 54.8 Ma, this webpage and the associated genus pages do not reflect this renaming (be it justified or not).
A detailed study has been made of the molluscan fauna in the material collected by Poul Harder in 1920 from the classical Danish early Selandian (Late Paleocene) locality in the Lellinge Greensand at Sundkrogen (the harbour of Copenhagen).
The palaeoenvironment is interpreted as a transgression of the Selandian Sea with erosion of the underlying Danian sediments.
The dark clay was probably deposited in a deep inlet from the eastern margin of the Selandian Sea.

Eight zones were recognized : 4 in Danian, 2 in Selandian and 2 in Thanetian.
There are also two important transgressions: the first one in the Selandian (Igorina albeari zone) and the second, in the Thanetian (Luterbacheria pseudomenardii zone).
The Paleocene basin of Chiapas is tectonically controlled by major EW strike-slip faults.
The Selandianstage is approximately equivalent to the long reversed-polarity Chron C26r (Fig.
At landward Site 1052, this remaining Selandian sediment is directly overlain by the mid-Lutetian of the middle Eocene, and we postulate that this major unconformity was created by an episode of middle Eocene erosion that stripped away a significant thickness of upper Paleocene sediments in the landward portion of this margin.
The pattern of relative thickness of the Thanetian strata across the margin mirrors the underlying Selandian.

Fossils found along the cliffs of the Potomac River just south of D.C. are from Aquia formation, which is from the Selandian, or late Paleocene.
This time period markes the final ending of the supercontinent Pangaea, as the last vestige split apart into Antarctica and Australia.

Abstract(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Secondly, coinciding with the Danian—Selandian boundary, an uplift of the Scotland—Shetland area resulting in a massive input of siliciclastic deposits to the North Sea Basin.
Thirdly, during the early Selandian, inversion of the Sorgenfrei-Tornquist Zone and Mesozoic basins in the southern and eastern part of the North Sea Basin resulted in a huge influx of reworked Cretaceous chalk and an almost complete stop of carbonate production.
Finally, later in the early Selandian, in connection to a general sea-level rise and a reduction in the gateway between the North Sea Basin and the Tethys Sea, the sea bottom conditions became colder and more acidic.
Palynology of the Selandian of Oraas (Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France): comparison with Danian-Selandian microplankton recorded in the world
The very diversified assemblages found at the top of the formation involve seventy species of dinoflagellates and fifty-seven species of pollen and spores.
The comparison of these dinoflagellate assemblages with the other ones recorded in the world enables confirmation of the age Selandian age (D2 or base of D3) of the uppermost part of the "
Sequence stratigraphy ,facies assocations and Petroleum system of Maastrchtian - Selandian-Thanetian - Yepressian and ...(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The sequence stratigraphic analysis Based on Facies associations, Planktonic and Shallow benthic Zones points to one 2nd order cycle and six 3rd order cycles and with ten 4th order cycles.
The first 3rd order cycle, manifests the early to late Selandian- TST., of retrogradditional, aggraditional stacking pattern.
The MFS of Pg10 at the selandian /Thanetian boundary overlies the first cycle.
