The 2.15 million acre Selawik National Wildlife Refuge is situated on the Arctic Circle to the east of Kotzebue Sound, and occupies a unique variety of landforms in northwest Alaska.
Refuge lands extend eastward toward the headwaters of the Selawik River and the continental divide.

The river supports anadromous populations of Dolly Varden, chinook, coho, chum and pink salmon and resident populations of Dolly Varden, Arctic grayling and whitefish.

Brief description of project: The study is occurring on the Selawik River, Tagagawik River, and the Tagagawik River Flats on the Selawik NWR.
The effect of browsing on plant architecture is determined by randomly tagging plants along transects in the winter and then evaluating the amount of browse occurring on the plant and the current annual growth at the end of the growing season The level of browse occurring in the refuge is determined along the river corridors.
Objectives: The study objective is to estimate the number of spawning sheefish in the Selawik River with confidence intervals for the years 2004 and 2005.

 Huslia River -- Alaska waterways
Lakes, ponds, and bogs were extremely numerous along the entire river and dot the land for miles away (perpendicular from the river).
Only one moose was seen along the river, however the habitat is excellent and according to biologists and local residents of Huslia and Galena, moose are both plentiful and large.
This ridge was different in that it was closer to the south side of the river and was the highest (675 ' a.s.1.) land in close proximity to the river.

Piledriver Slough, a small tributary to the Tanana River, is stocked annually on an experimental basis and has become the favorite among trout fishermen as it provides the only rain- bow trout fishing in flowing waters in the area.
Excellent opportunities to spear whitefish in the Tanana River drainage and in particular the upper Chatanika River are available in September and October.
Trophy-size Dolly Varden are present in the Wulik and Kivalina Rivers and tributaries of the Noatak River, all near Kotzebue.

Sheefish bag limits on the Selawik River are now in agreement with those on the Kobuk River, giving extra protection to spawners.
In the Unalakleet River drainage, any salmon removed from the water shall be retained and becomes part of the bag limit of the person originally hooking it.
