  Selby Abbey
Selby Abbey is unique in the North of England, as the first monastery to be founded in the North after the Norman Conquest and one of the few in England to have survived as a parish church.
The Abbey was granted its founding charter by William the Conqueror and has connections with France, Germany and the USA.
It is reputed to be the birthplace in September 1068 of King Henry I of England, the son of King William I and Queen Mathilda.

The local authority, Selby District Council, is based in the town of Selby and provides services to an area which includes Tadcaster and a host of villages.
The district was formed on April 1, 1974 by the merger of Selby Urban District and parts of Derwent Rural District, Hemsworth Rural District, Osgoldcross Rural District and Tadcaster Rural District.
Selby Abbey is believed to hold the inspiration for the flag of the USA with the Washington Window.

Selby Abbey dominates the town centre of Selby today, much as it must have done for the last nine hundred years.
In contrast to many of the northern abbeys, such as Fountains and Rievaulx, Selby was saved from utter devastation by the continued use of the church by the local population.
As a Benedictine Abbey, the surrounding populace had always come here for their religious observance and even though the form and language of the services had changed, habits are hard to break.

The Benedictine abbey was built in typical Norman style with Herringbone masonry and its internal architecture is similar to Durham Cathedral.
Selby was lucky enought to escape and although part was pulled down, the central nave survived and in 1618 it became the parish church of Selby.
Drax, east of Selby and west of Goole is located in a section of land between the River Ouse and the River Aire.

The Abbey Church which stands at the end of the Market Place is the most prominent building in Selby and forms, together with the Abbot's Staithe, all that remains of a large monastery founded in the year 1069 by the monk Benedict who travelled from Auxerre in France.
William the Conqueror who was in York at the time, gave Benedict permission to found the Abbey and granted him lands to support it.
Until the dissolution by Henry VIII in 1539, town activities were dominated by the requirements of the Abbey.

Founded in the 11th century it housed circa 30 monks and was dissolved in 1540.

The Washington Window, containing the Heraldic arms of the Washington family, is to be found in the south clerestory window of the choir and is the original fourteenth century glass.
The Washington shield at Selby probably represents some kind of benefaction made to the Abbey to commemorate John Wessington, Prior of Durham (1416~1446) the most distinguished collateral ancestor of George Washington.

As the year 2001 marks the centenary of the death of Guiseppe Verdi, three Yorkshire choirs decided to join forces to perform the ever popular and dramatic Requiem, a concert which attracted a capacity audience.
The Easingwold Singers and North Yorkshire Chorus had travelled to Sheffield on the previous Sunday to join the Sheffield University Chorus and Orchestra in the Octagon at the University.
The soloists for the Abbey concert were Hilary Jackson (soprano), Christine Rice (mezzo-soprano), John Bowley (tenor) and D'Arcy Bleiker (baritone), the concert was conducted by Martin Hindmarsh.

Selby Abbey rocked on its foundations last night and well into Saturday as Pink Floyd, Jon Hiseman’s Colosseum and Eire Apparent hammered out the last night of the festival.
About 2,000 young people from all over Yorkshire poured into Selby and then into a large marquee to hear music like Selby has never heard before.
The whole festival marks the 900th anniversary of the Abbey.
