The Commons Select Committees are generally responsible for overseeing the work departments and agencies, whereas those of the Lords look at general issues, such as the constitution or the economy; both Houses have their own Committees to review drafts of European Union directives.
In July 2005 the Administration Select Committee was instituted, replacing the five Domestic Committees which had been responsible for the consideration of services provided for the House in the Palace of Westminster from 1991 to 2005.

A select committee expires on completion of its assigned duties unless it's a Permanent Select committee, such as the U.S. House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

With the commencement of the 96th Congress, the Select Committee on Indian Affairs was to expire and jurisdiction over Indian matters was to be transferred to the Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources.
The measure was amended by the Rules Committee to extend the life of the committee for two years until January 2, 1981, and was agreed to by the Senate on October 14, 1978.
The Resolution had 28 cosponsors, and was reported by the Rules Committee with an amendment to extend the select committee to January 2, 1984, and to expand the membership to seven members commencing in the 97th Congress.
