Selected Ambient Works Volume II - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Selected Ambient Works Volume II (SAW2), released in 1994, is an ambient double album by Richard D. James under his Aphex Twin moniker.
Volume II differs significantly from Aphex Twin's first volume in that the first volume is mostly beat-oriented, with complex instrumental rhythmic patterns and heavy bass frequencies.
Volume II originally consisted of 25 songs, all untitled except for the song "Blue Calx".

A Comparative Analysis of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume II and Steve Reich's Music For 18 Musicians
The music in this sixty-minute work never veers far from the theme established in “Pulses.” The parts in the sections that sound different from previous configurations of the theme are merely the results of pitch and tempo alteration, as well as the interchange of musical instruments.
Each of these works deserves patience and attention in order before comprehension of their genius is awarded to the listener.
Selected Ambient Works Volume II and Music for 18 Musicians are deceptively configured, but with the right approach this becomes not a hindrance but a virtue.

II is the two-disc follow-up to the import-only Selected Ambient Works 85-92, the album that established the Cornwall, England, native as the pioneer of ambient techno, a musical style that converts the energized electrobeats and keyboard surges of dance-floor techno into slower, more tranquil sound washes.
II, James turns away from the glut of soulless techno by stripping away its base properties, focusing more intently on mood than on rhythm and melody.
Drawing inspiration from the early ambient work of Brian Eno and the minimalism of John Cage, James has created a riveting, experimental record that demands listener interaction.

Where ambient techno is melodious (sometimes recalling program music or the naivete of a child's music box), isolationism favors musique concrete, dissonance, and microtonality; where ambient's sequencer bass patterns reassure, isolationism's loops tend to be unresolved, creating suspense; in place of ambient's halcyon reverb, isolationism uses an echo that is cavernous and metallic.
Toop, a critic as well as a musician, recently wrote of how certain strands of contemporary music reflect "the sensation of nonspecific dread that many people now feel when they think about life, the world, the future," and argued that this sensation was the other side of the coin to a sensation of nonspecific bliss.
Unlike ambient techno (which models itself on that pseudowomb the flotation tank), isolationism's idea of utopia is empty space.

These may sound like exaggerations, but 'Selected Ambient Works Volume 2' has a rare and profound effect upon me, and is one of the few albums I own that bears no likeness to anything else.

While its predecessor, Selected Ambient Works '85-'92 drew on seven years worth of material, the uniform quality of these untitled tracks, plus their judicious sequencing, suggests they were assembled over a shorter period.
Clocking in at over 150 minutes, the double-disc set (if this is "selected", how many hours of outtakes remain?) provides an exemplary introduction to the quieter facets of James's expansive, idiosyncratic aesthetic.
Selected Ambient Works is not an entirely representative recording, as these are essentially mood pieces, unlike the more instantaneous, dancefloor-targeted material that originally brought him to the nation's attention.

Most of the works have no beats, but are instead made up of slowly repeating electronic sounds, some acoustic sounds such as piano, and some unidentifiable noises.

The mischievous, enigmatic Englishman Richard James is the sole author of these two strange, compelling excursions in ambient techno.
While his roots lie at the hardcore and industrial end of the dance spectrum - a style to which he has since returned - his popularity among dance boffins was enough to send Selected Ambient Works Volume II into the UK Top Twenty on its release in 1994.
On that album particularly, the minimalist ethic of composers like Eno is clearly at work with James cunningly developing his pieces so that subtle changes become like major events (mind you, a few dance critics misunderstood the second album's understatement as some kind of sick joke).

What is of course particularly intriguing about these tracks is that none of them seem 'ambient' per se, instead finding odd rhythms without beat (and sometimes with) and aiming more for a meditative, focused on the song state as opposed to something which you can easily ignore.
Screwing with expectations is always a nice thing, of course, and the fact remains this as much disturbs as it soothes, and of course sometimes it does this at once.
By the time it does finally conclude with the bottomless cold creep of the final track, an echoed percussion sound almost like a rippling raindrop and floating musical colors out of the wrong sort of space, things aren't quite what they seemed as when we started, and clearly we're not in Kansas anymore.

Two misperceptions about Popp are that he makes ambient music and all his work sounds the same.
In the watershed year 1994, the ambient label almost applied, due in part to Oval's composition process at the time.
That year, Popp, along with then-collaborators Sebastian Oschatz and Frank Metzger, decided to take copies of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume II, apply a magic marker to the CD surface, and record and manipulate the ensuing tracking errors.

Selected Ambient Works Volume II contains just over two and a half hours' worth of music, which is just as well because it's a vast departure from Aphex Twin's other output: it is his only full album in the beatless ambient genre, one or two unobtrusive rhythms aside.
Clipping and painful resonance are present in several tracks, and an overall amateur sound marrs the final result.
Despite all that, Selected Ambient Works Volume II is one of the most original albums I've heard.

He experimented with electronics from an early age, winning a competition to make a Sinclair ZX Spectrum play a tune by setting the connected television's volume to full and alternating the colours on the screen, producing different pitches of noise.
Early releases featured a more hardcore and acid based sound (Ventolin is often called one of the harshest or most abrasive songs ever recorded due to the screeching trebles and breaking beats), and later progressing into his critically acclaimed ambient works, while his hardcore side remained active through his pseudonym of Caustic Window.
Several of these claims include him owning an 1950s armoured scout car (a Daimler Ferret Mark 3), a submarine, composing ambient techno music at age 13 (contradicting most music history), building all of his synthesizers from scratch, having "over 100 hours" of unreleased music, and living in a converted bank.
