 VOOT 411: Selective Fire
For Virtuaroids that have Center Weapons that fire from both sides- causing more than one projectile or laser to be shot with a sigle CW activation; they have the ability to select which side they want the projectile to be shot, instead of firing both sides.
Selective Fire is used mainly to conserve weapon energy.
So Raiden can fire a half-cage, run to one side and when his CW energy recharges enough, fire another half cage intersection the first in an X manner (it is possible to trap an enemy within the criss-crossed half cages and the stage boundary).

Select fire multiple drill string tester - Patent 5598894
A first selective communication device is provided for isolating the second firing head from the source of actuating fluid pressure until after the first perforating gun has been fired, and for then communicating the second firing head with the source of actuating fluid pressure in response to firing of the first perforating gun.
With these systems, the selection of the appropriate firing head and gun to be fired is determined by the pressure which is applied to the tubing string or the well annulus to actuate the firing head.

Selective logging operations typically remove 10 to 20 percent of the trees in a given area of forest.
Fire is also used to clear areas for logging camps and loading areas, and these fires sometimes escape into the forest.
Fires used in the establishment of cattle pasture and farm plots, and in pasture management, often burn beyond their intended boundaries, damaging perennial crops, agroforestry systems, and forest management systems.

Russian doctrines asserted that the typical troop was unable to aim beyond 400 m, and therefore that should be the ultimate aimed range of a rifle for massed fire.
To reduce logistic problems, and still provide high rates of fire, some current military doctrines employ a squad automatic weapon used by one or a few specially-trained soldiers in a squad.
This was developed at the same time as the US M1/M2 carbine was produced (the M2 version had selective fire).

The M4 is used with a blank firing attachment when using blank rounds, without the BFA it does not cycle.

Selective fire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Selective fire weapons always have a semi-automatic mode, where the weapon automatically reloads the chamber after each round is fired, but requires that the trigger be pulled again before firing the next round.
The selection is often by a small rotating switch usually integral with the safety catch, but there have been other ways of choosing the mode of fire.
Selective fire weapons are regulated in the United States under the National Firearms Act of 1934; their new manufacture for the civilian market was prohibited by the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986.

 Assault rifle - FirearmWiki
An assault rifle is a type of automatic rifle generally defined as a selective fire rifle or carbine (depending on the particular firearm's size), using intermediate-powered ammunition.
The M1 Carbine was originally planned to have automatic fire, but this was dropped from the first version, although later in the war, selective fire variants were made (M2 and M3 Carbines).
It is a common misconception that the assault weapons ban restricted weapons capable of fully-automatic fire, such as assault rifles and machine guns.

HKPRO: The Mechanics of H&K NFA Conversions
The fire control selector switch is identical in both semi-auto and selective fire variants of the guns, and is merely prevented from moving into the full-automatic selected position in the semi-auto trigger groups by a mechanical detent formed into the exterior of the trigger housing.
This was due to an altered mechanical geometry required by the need to have the same mechanical functioning as a factory selective fire pack, but in a geometry necessitated by the requirement of having the lower front edge of the fire control pack adapted to mount on the “clip-on ledge” of the semi-auto receiver.
Selection of cyclic fire mode merely allows the trigger to drop the “secondary” sear (also functioning as the disconnector) backward and down out of contact with the hammer engagement surface.

The selective fire capability was mostly useless, since the M14 was way too light for powerful cartridge it fired, and climbed excessively when fired in bursts.
In fact, most of the M14s were issued to troops with fire selectors locked to semi-automatic mode, to avoid useless waste of ammunition in automatic fire.
It had the accuracy and range of an "old time" military rifles, but was too long, heavy and lacked the selective fire firepower of a true assault rifle, required in the modern combat.

According to the purists, an assault rifle has to be selective fire.
Military and civilian experts agree that semi-automatic fire is actually more—not less—likely to hit the target than is automatic fire, and is thus more deadly.[19] Regardless, a person of moderate skill can fire a semi-automatic assault weapon at an extremely fast rate of fire.

Factsheets Database - The Development of The Assault Rifle - Powered by ReviewPost
The assault rifle is a term describing a type of automatic rifle generally defined as a selective fire rifle or carbine, chambering intermediate-powered ammunition.
They are categorized between the larger and heavier light machine gun, which is intended more for sustained automatic fire in a support role, and the smaller submachine gun, which fires a handgun cartridge rather than a rifle cartridge.
Conversely, full-sized military rifle calibers were uncomfortable to fire repeatedly and difficult to control during fully-automatic or rapid fire because of significant recoil; cost of design and manufacture was also higher.
